This is a good reminder for everyone - if you're truly trying to do something nice for someone, then you won't get upset if they decline your help, because you know that it's not about you.
If you do find yourself getting frustrated about it, then take a breath and realize that you weren't doing it for them, you were doing it to make yourself feel like some kind of savior.
@georgetakei This is something me & almost every disabled person I know has experienced at least once in our lives.
I wrote about how consent is important for us disabled folks, last month.
@georgetakei it's a daily occurrence for me, walking to work with a long cane. Multiple verbal and physical interventions without any kind of checking if it was wanted.
@georgetakei I'm a disabled person (diagnosed with #ALS over twenty years ago but I'm still independent), I use a cane and a walker to get around. Idiots will stand in my way holding the door open for me when I need to hold onto the door handle, and get angry when I tell them to let go, again and again. The thing is, I'm in better muscular shape than most regular gym goers half my age (I'm 58). People violate my personal space all the time.
@georgetakei Ty George. As disabled my whole life, we should not have our autonomy taken away without our permission, regardless of how much experience the other has.
The experienced should know to ask permission, otherwise they're abusive, like some carers I had to fire for trying to dominate my life and destinations in contrast to my own wishes.
