A Kansas judge says barring driver's license changes doesn't violate trans people's rights

From the link: "The Kansas law doesn’t mention driver’s licenses or birth certificates but says for the purposes of any state law or regulation, a person’s sex is “either male or female,” based on their “biological reproductive system” identified at birth [ie, genitals].

Judge Teresa Watson ruled that the law’s language is clear and “there are no exceptions. Information recorded on a driver’s license does not interfere with transgender persons’ ability to control their own bodies or assert bodily integrity or self-determination”.

Watson was appointed by prior Governor Sam Brownback (R), so this probably should not be an unexpected ruling.

The NAACP has had enough of DeSantis' anti-DEI policies and are encouraging Black athletes to boycott Florida schools.

"This is not simply about sports; it’s about acknowledging and advocating for the rights and supports of Black students within educational environments.”

We'll see if sports (and the millions of dollars of revenue they bring in) will be the Achilles heel of these studies e on universities in the name of combatting 'wokeness'.

    "The very fact that the delivery of “a significant amount” of aid is conditional on Hamas accepting Israeli demands underscores that Israel, with US backing, is using that aid as a tool of coercion. People's failure to understand that fascism is a fairly banal worldview reflects a refusal to understand how common and ordinary looking it is and how well it hides behind our modern high tech lifestyles.

    Fascism doesn't have to have 1930s pomposity and daily military parades.

    It can look like America, right now, today, depending on who and where you are. America already has military jingoism, mass incarceration, mass surveillance, unchecked paramilitaries, and theocrats denying our rights.

    jargoggles,
    @jargoggles@mstdn.social avatar

    @gwynnion
    There's a certain gaslighting quality to liberals constantly browbeating everyone critical of Biden or Democrats in general by saying that it's either them or a fascist takeover.

    Superficially, it's not wrong. In the ballot box, there are only two choices for all intents and purposes: dictatorship and not-dictatorship.

    However, this conveniently ignores that the failure of Democrats to actually combat fascism is how we got to this point in the first place.

    jargoggles,
    @jargoggles@mstdn.social avatar

    @gwynnion
    So saying that the Democratic Party as a whole needs to do better and demanding change is a much, much stronger rejection of fascism than what liberals are doing.

    Telling us to hold our nose and bite our tongue is tantamount to saying that you are perfectly okay with voting for exactly the same circumstances that brought us to this point to begin with. Neoliberalism brought fascism to our doorstep. Simply not inviting it in isn't sufficient. We need to push it back.

    If I were a Democratic politician who was solely concerned on keeping my job while having to deliver as little as possible, I would be thrilled with the current status quo.

    Any criticism of Biden is immediately compared to the fact that Trump will be worse. Can you imagine if your performance at work was held to the standard of the absolute least competent person for the job? And people think that's a good way to evaluate how well the fucking president is doing?

    You're cheering on "the toughest set of border security reforms we’ve ever seen in this country?" Unprecedented, unilateral executive power over the borders? Hiring cops by the hundreds and hundreds?

    Republicans didn't want Biden to be the one to pass it because they feel like it's a political win for him. That's not my opinion, that's the prevailing take on why it got gridlocked.

    The Postal Service - Give Up (2003)

    This album came out of left field. It was a collaboration with electronica producer Dntl and Death Cab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard. Jenny Lewis did background vocals. At the time, indie didn’t venture much into electronic instrumentation. But this was the perfect pairing. The synths sounded warm and inviting. Ben Gibbard’s vocals expressed a sense of wonder. This was a comfy album perfect for night walks in the rain.

    You know those action films where the father rescues his kidnapped daughter?

    I think it’s time we have an action film where a grandmother rescues her kidnapped grandson.

    In this film, the grandma presents as a sweet old lady that likes to bake apple pie. But when a fake sorority that’s actually a gang of human traffickers kidnaps her grandson, her secret special ops training kicks into high gear, and she takes out each trashy sorority sister out one by one.
