"Focusing on doomsday scenarios in artificial intelligence is a distraction that plays down immediate risks such as the large-scale generation of misinformation, according to a senior industry figure attending this week’s AI safety summit."

Yeah - it is frustrating that there's so much focus on silly sci-fi threats when right now, LLMs are being used to fill the web with spam.

aaron,

@tomw @mekkaokereke it’s not silly, it’s calculated. If you distract from the real issues with fake doomsday scenarios, they will leave you alone while you break things. Then you can fix the problems that you created and claim victory over the doomsday scenarios that you put forth in the first place. It’s regular misinformation tactics.

andymandias,

@aaron @tomw @mekkaokereke AI doomsday folks have been around for far longer than LLMs have been a tech industry fad (Roko’s basilisk is over a decade old!). That’s not to say they’re not seen as useful idiots by some, but there’s an annoying prevalence of true believers ime.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@aaron @mekkaokereke I see this claimed quite often but I'm not convinced - I don't think the "AI doomsday" people are some kind of astroturf effort to promote AI

aaron,

@tomw @mekkaokereke I haven't seen a reason to believe otherwise.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@aaron So we should just believe any made up theory in the absence of proof to the contrary?

aaron,

@tomw no not at all. I’m just replying with how I feel. It’s all theory at this point anyway.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@aaron Yeah, I don't mean to be needlessly confrontational, I just see this repeated all over as if it's self-evident, but not argued through properly

bouriquet,
@bouriquet@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw It’s only a doomsday for truth, since it’s often so convincing that it will cloud the difference between truth and fabrication

@tomw

So the world ends. Not with a scream or whimper, but with an avalanche of mindless word salad.

@violetmadder @tomw It's the Grey Goo apocalypse, but with information.

@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@tob @tomw

Holy shit you're right!

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@tob @violetmadder I think you are correct but that is still a lot less bad than a "real" apocalypse

violetmadder,
@violetmadder@kolektiva.social avatar

@tomw @tob

Oh the "real" apocalypse is also happening. The informational grey goo is inundating the facilities we need to inform people that it is, in fact, happening and what needs to be done about it.
