Me, 30 years later: wait, why is it 2πr and not just πd?

dbat,
@dbat@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ghosttie bcoz it sounds like two purr.

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@ghosttie it's actually tau d / 2

@ghosttie It's π that should be doubled. We should be using τ instead to avoid the doubling. The formula should just be τ*r.

@ghosttie A circle is defined by its radius, not its diameter.

We should use tau instead of pi :)

τ > π

@ghosttie i would think because it makes it easier later in calculus to understand the integration relationship from 2pir circumference to pi*r^2 area (and same deal with sphere surface area vs. volume, etc etc)

@ghosttie should be tau•r...

@ghosttie @aeva d only exists in the wrong reference frame, like the centrifugal force.

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@GyrosGeier @ghosttie everything is equally arbitrary in that reference frame (I assume you mean high school math class)
