Is it overengineering using shaders to make this screen transition?

@stephann I didn't know if it's overengineering but it is cool

I have a weird desire for a piece of clockwork, small enough to fit in your pocket or hold in your hand, that vibrates strongly once a second. Like a pocket watch but without the clock face and with much stronger vibration.

I kind of want to hold it when I'm talking, to help remind me to slow down and enunciate.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to exist.

I spent a bunch of time trying out different wrong ways to place tiles isometrically before giving up and finding somewhere that told me how to do it. I don't actually understand what it's doing because it didn't explain it, but it works...

Performance is still awful.
The good news is that the Visual Studio diagnostic tools work with WASM, but the bad news is that it just says all the code's happening in internal methods so it's useless...

This is a pretty basic, "and what's the deal with airline food??" kinda observation, but

It's just been brought to my attention that a Chrome tab takes up a minimum of 24 to 28 MB of RAM*, even if it's looking at about:blank or an empty HTML page. There are good engineering reasons it might work this way but I am also thinking about how my first computer-shaped computer** had 4 MB of RAM and that was like, an OS plus sophisticated full apps. Later we upgraded to 8 MB RAM and that was a big deal

ghosttie,
@ghosttie@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mcc it has a copy of the JS engine per process, that takes up some space

I was otherwise occupied this weekend so I've only today been able to take a shot at adding isometric tiles.

It kind of works, in that I have displayed some tiles on the screen, but the whole offset-every-other-row thing with isometric is annoying

Also it turns out I only get about 12 FPS when I'm filling the screen with tiles, so I'll need to optimize that a lot somehow, which probably means learning some math 😬

Why does "Update and shut down" instead "Update and restart"?

How hard is it not to start a computer?

I’m a middle aged English bloke, a visitor from the past, so I find high fives awkward. I’ll go along with your high five - I won’t leave ya hangin’ no way that’d be rude - but inside I’ll be thinking the whole experience was a bit odd and I’ll be wondering how forced and awkward it might have looked on the outside.

Because routine is important, I'm declaring the inaugural #ShirtCheckSunday.

Here's the deal: every Sunday, I'm going to put on a nice tee/shirt and share it with that hashtag, and I'd love to see yours.

Band shirts are traditional, but I'm more than happy to see geek tees, or - get this - actual fashion sense.

You can just post a pic, or share a bit more about it. Faces not required, use the hashtag if you like, reply as you like, admire one another's outfits. 🖤

I'm wearing an Ancst short-sleeve today.

https://angstnoise.bandcamp.com/music

They make anti-fascist black metal, dark ambient, crust and blackened metalcore.

The shirt is further evidence that, if you're an RABM band that prints black-white-gold tees, I will buy them.

Trying to avoid eye contact with today's pic, which looks inadvertently dramatic.

Not sure whether I want to use isometric or 3/4 perspective for my game

It's a big decision because I'm not good at art so it'll be painful if I have to redo it all a different way

It feels like it's really common for people who play games to want to make them. Usually coding is a big barrier, but I taught myself coding and so my big barrier is art...

ghosttie,
@ghosttie@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@yora isometric is kind of traditional for tactics games, maybe because the kind of over the top view gives you a more board-game-y point of view

There are English idioms which just sound disgusting to me

"Fill your boots" - for some reason I imagine a person with diarrhea wearing rain boots just standing there crapping until their boots are full...

"Soup to nuts" - why are you putting the soup there? That's not where soup is supposed to go. Now you've ruined the soup. Why are your nuts even involved in this process?

I just learned of a person who completed Hades despite being blind and... HOW? They also commented on Beat Slayer being almost suitable for blind people. I am impressed and confused - and curious. Apparently it does not take too much to make games accessible for blind people so... maybe I should learn more about that.

ghosttie,
@ghosttie@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@wildrikku I know I wouldn't ever be able to complete Hades, and now I feel like I don't deserve my eyes

I've added mouse input events, so it's possible for the player to actually do things - revolutionary!

Unfortunately a decision I made early on to use object-fit: contain; to size the canvas came back to bite me because that meant that it was impossible (difficult) to figure out the mouse position. So I had to redo the canvas sizing, but now everything works as it should.

Sprite transparency!

It turns out combining RBG pixels with alpha isn't as simple as I'd thought. After a bunch of unsatisfactory googling I found this answer, which it turns out I'd voted up at some point in the past, so I guess that's a pretty good recommendation.

https://stackoverflow.com/a/1944193/395319

In any case it seems to work, although I can't confirm whether it's mathematically correct.
