Any of my mutuals know about starting/running a newsletter and would be willing to help me out a little bit? LMK. Or give me a , maybe a kindly stranger will see it and reach out.

mambear404,

@etherdiver

What's the newsletter to be about?

etherdiver,
@etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

@mambear404 taking the little mini record/reaction pieces to new independent music that I do here and elsewhere and centralizing them, basically.

More generally, a place for my writing about music.

    @AlgoCompSynth centralizing the audience for the music intro/reaction pieces I write on here/elsewhere every month. Basically a music discovery newsletter with bonus music-related content.

    @AlgoCompSynth not terribly tech savvy...I mean, I used to be moderately techy but I let my skills atrophy for a decade so...

    @etherdiver what's your goal?

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @RevXenoFact centralize the audience for the short reaction/review pieces I write every month about new indie music. Be a home for actual music writing I do. Monetize it to whatever degree it can be.

    @etherdiver Not a mutual, but I've been running newsletters for probably close to two decades or more. Maybe I can help?

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @KitMuse you're a mutual now!

    I write about indie bands here, was thinking I'd launch a weekly newsletter focused on doing the little reaction/hype pieces I do for new music here and other social media, with additional "bonus" content about music each week. Looking for input/advice about what software to look at/avoid, how to get going, pitfalls to avoid, etc.

    KitMuse,
    @KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

    @etherdiver So I'd ask a couple of questions

    1. How are you capturing leads? Are they coming from a website or are you just tossing out a link on social media? Either one is valid, but you want integration from the start if possible.

    2. Are you looking to monetize?

    3. Are you looking for open source/free options or do you want to pay?

    4. Are you a WordPress person?

    Substack and Email Octopus are both excellent free starter options. Email Octopus does more integration. 1/

    @KitMuse

    1. Getting leads here, bluesky, etc and on my website

    2. yeah, but in a non aggressive way. Majority content risky free, paid/supporter tier for early delivery and occasional bonus content

    3. free is better but I can pay if it's relatively affordable and works a lot better

    4. yeah but mostly just to use the CMS. I don't program it or even mess with CSS and that kinda shit.

    @etherdiver
    AVOID - Mailchimp or Mailerlite if at all possible. Mailchimp is owned by Intuit now = big data grab Mailerlite is just a PITA.

    Otherwise, I am a HUGE proponent of newsletters. Own your own audience!

    I use Sendy (paid, but self-hosted) for now, but am hoping to switch to Mautic which looks to be an open source version of Active Campaign. (bells & whistles, I think!)

    Any other questions - just ask. //

    @KitMuse thanks this is great info! I'll look at these options, maybe have a few questions for ya later.

    tailsy,

    @etherdiver What specifically do you need help with?

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @tailsy suggestions about what software/management tools to use, mostly. Just help getting it off the ground. I am decent at the marketing aspects, I can write like a MFer, but the technical aspects and selecting the "right" package off the bat (without making 5 wrong decisions first LOL) are a little intimidating.

    tailsy,

    @etherdiver Okay, that makes sense. Are you looking for a software-as-service solution for mailing lists to handle subscriptions? What kinds of things are “needs” and “wants” for you when it comes to tooling?

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @tailsy Boy howdy, I do not know!

    My intention is to launch a weekly newsletter focused on doing the little reaction/hype pieces I do for new music here and other social media, with additional "bonus" content about music each week. Was thinking I'd do a free version that goes out Fridays, and a paid version which goes out Wednesdays (and, once a month or so, has some "paid bonus" content that isn't available elsewhere as a thank you to paying supporters.)

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @tailsy So ability to maintain two "tiers" of the letter, including the ability to inject some extra stuff into the "paid" tier. Access to the email lists to compare them to various things, I suppose. Uhhh... probably a bunch of other stuff I don;t know about now...

    tailsy,

    @etherdiver Have you seen Jamie’s List? That is a music production newsletter that’s hosted on Substack; you might want to check Substack out first to see if it meets your needs?

    etherdiver,
    @etherdiver@ravenation.club avatar

    @tailsy Substack is owned by a POS Nazi adjacent dirtbag. I'd prefer to avoid it, but if it is head and shoulders above everything else, I'd consider it I suppose.

    tailsy,

    @etherdiver Gotcha; let’s add “not run by a Nazi-adjacent dirt bag” to the “nice to have” criteria list and keep looking. 😉
