modacitylife,

By 2040, Dutch railways will operate 700,000 bike parking spaces at 410 stations nationwide.

Every single one is free of charge—at least for the first 24 hours—because they realize their purpose isn’t to create a new source of revenue… it’s to create a new source of passengers.

PaulBucci,

@modacitylife holland is to be commended on bicycle infrastructure. However, accommodating bicycles in Europe — especially on trains — is generally not done well. No access for high speed trains, and bicycle cars or bicycle stands on other trains are an afterthought.

shoozejim,

@modacitylife

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those bikes don't appear to be locked. That behavior would cause a virtual feeding frenzy of thievery in big American cities 😮

You’re wrong about that

Yes, in the Netherlands, esp. the large cities, bikes have heavy locks. Even very crappy old ones. In most rural areas this may be different, idk.

Now, in Switzerland in towns in the Alps I notice that it is still common that even the most expensive mountain bikes are casually parked without putting locks on them.

Bikes in the image all have locks attached to the frame just below the saddle.

Edit: Oops, I see I just repeated what many already answered. Sorry about that.
