also, put solar panels everywhere. even cars. the fact that EVs don't often have built-in solar for charging their batteries just blows my mind.
yeah let's use the same electricity made from burning things, to charge our dubiously green electric cars. not many people realise how bad batteries are:
@libreleah@rose_alibi Usable surface area on a car is too small to make a dent (ideal conditions add range slower than walking speed) and with weight and cost of the panels it’s net a negative in most cases. It’s better to charge from more efficient stationary grid-scale solar.
@kornel@rose_alibi The weight of the photovoltaic material I don't imagine would be that much?
On solar panels used atop roofs, much of the weight will be the support structure holding the material in place.
In this case, that support structure is the existing car chassis.
I hope car makers will explore this at some point. Especially as EVs become more power efficient. It might make for completely viable, battery-free and oil-free travel during daytime.
@rose_alibi we software developers have a lot to blame as well. We keep creating more bloated software that erase years and years of hardware improvements.
No doubt if software was made with performance in mind, the need of buying new hardware would diminish.
@rose_alibi@dalias
I just saw what iOS17 will do. My 5 y.o. Phone will work with iOS16 for another couple of years before it needs to be replaced. I won’t wait until then to buy one.
I learned in Elementary School, the brown paper bag I used to carry my lunch had a limited life. If I pushed the envelope, I might go without eating lunch.
Just sayin’. YRMV
@SandyO@rose_alibi The claim isn't about what gives you the best experience but what the most eco-friendly choice is.
If capitalists are applying ugly incentives to make it gratuitously painful for you to make thay choice, maybe we should reconsider allowing them to do that.
@dalias@rose_alibi
I think I understood that in your o.p. A new device usually runs longer on a charge, therefore has a smaller carbon footprint. Old devices can often be recycle, reducing the cost of making new ones.
Choosing a product to buy that is ecofriendly is not hard. I find there is more than one way to conduct my life in an ecofriendly way. YRMV
@SandyO@dalias@rose_alibi for starters, "recycling" doesn't come free. It's painfully expensive, complex, and doesn't cause "making new devices easier". Please inform yourself about the carbon footprint of manufacture and logistics before trying to make people believe you're eco friendly because you replaced a 1 year old battery with a new device whose battery now lasts one more hour so you waste less energy charging it. It's a ridiculous statement.
@dalias@rose_alibi When I traded in my car for a newer (used) one, the salesperson looked at the registration papers for my old one and quite literally asked "you've had it that long?"
"Yeah, I've had it that long."
(Close to 11 years, as it happens; and I didn't buy it new. Kept servicing it regularly, though.)
@N1ZZZ@rose_alibi Apple has not made a laptop with a replaceable battery for a long time. It would be substantially thicker and heavier to have all the extra hardware for a removable battery.
@EricFielding@N1ZZZ@rose_alibi Apple claims that it would be "substantially" thicker and heavier, but that's not really the case. For example, they claim that about the iPhone, but the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 had a user-replaceable battery, and it was thinner than the contemporary iPhone, and not noticeably heavier.
Apple makes batteries non-removable because it's better for Apple, not because it's better for you. And then the rest of the industry follows.
@rose_alibi@N1ZZZ Even when they are, there may not be anything to replace them with. I have a ThinkPad X200. Wonderful device with a replaceable battery. However it seems to be impossible to get new working batteries for it, so for now I'll have to stick with either the one that I can trust to hold one hour or the one that sometimes holds six but sometimes also just randomly dies. Twice I wanted to get a new one, both times they were dead on arrival.
@resuna@rose_alibi@N1ZZZ Yes, it's one of three possible battery models that fit the X200. Note however that the chances of getting one that still works reasonably well are kinda low. They have all been sitting around unused for over a decade and are usually untested by the sellers. That's what I meant when I said there are no replacements.
@rose_alibi yes! My 2015 macboook pro has surpassed all expectations by still working surprisingly well 8 years in!
Though I did have to apply for a replacement faculty computer because if I don't, I'll lose the funds and never see them again 😥
@elikaortega@rose_alibi devil’s advocate: if departments always end up making “frivolous” spends to keep their budget each year, so they actually need that budget..?
Comes up at my work now and then. This year I was honest and halved the ask for our test hardware purchasing as the last 5 years we’ve come nowhere near close to actually needing it without silly purchase heh.
