👆posting this blog on social media futures for science discourse has already put me in touch with three different sets of people working on concrete projects or interested in such projects (see whole thread to find them), but are there more out there?

And I’d love to hear from academics on what they want! @NicoleCRust and @bwaber have provided/sparked what was by far the best content for me on this platform last year. Do you both have thoughts on your ideal social media future?

Thank you!

And great question. My ideal social media future is: focused on discussions around ideas, includes a diversity of perspectives, happens in a safe space (where no one needs to suffer or fear abuse to participate), and has a lot of buy-in.

There's also a slice of what I'm looking for that I was describe as "high SNR": I want to filter in ideas; I don't want to sift through a lot of social stuff (read cat pictures) to get to it (although I fault no one for wanting something different).

This platform is the closest to what I'm looking for, but not quite it (there's 1) no filter and 2) not enough buy in). I don't participate on X because it's not a safe space for all.

@NicoleCRust re-1), there's a way to filter posts on mastodon: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moderating/#filters. Hope this helps cleanse your timeline! Note to self - pin a @socialwg post about how to filter messages, and update wiki to include this as a tip https://wiki.neuromatch.social/Using_Mastodon

re 2) yeah, and we haven't found the recipe to make more folks transition to communities that are owned by themselves rather than by for-profit corporations :( working on this in a voluntary capacity also makes it a bit challenging as the efforts are happening in our spare time, which is limited. I will continue to try and raise funds for it. Our first attempt at fund-raising got positive reviews from all 3 reviewers but wasn't funded unfortunately :(
