We've never had a winter in the greater Chicago area since Tesla was founded I guess. My Model 3 driving in -30C was a myth.

@feld Does that mean the establishment of Tesla caused the climate to warm enough to eliminate Chicago Winters? :blobfoxthonking:

@feld conveniently forgetting the phrase “cold kills” to own the EV crowd

@awl @feld I prefer "cotton kills". :blobfox:

@tk both somewhat related to one another. @feld

@feld I was reading up on this after reading this story, and learned that EV's will regulate the battery temperature even while turned off. So, if it's a cold winter and you forget to plug-in overnight, then you will likely discover that maybe around a third of your charge is already gone: https://insideevs.com/features/703378/how-cold-affects-electric-vehicles/

@tomey Yeah if you live where it gets really cold and you don't have a place to plug in at night you're gonna have a bad time

Similar to having a diesel and not using an engine block heater.

Even gasoline will struggle at these temps if you park outside and don't have HEET or similar added to your tank. Nobody writes articles about all the ICE cars stranded lol

@feld @tomey 7F this morning and my petrol car showed normal temperatures and pressures, but it was kind of..weird. Didn't like it. That's not even especially low. I think the coolant got up to temperature long before the block and heating block did.

@sullybiker@sully.site avatar

@feld @tomey Oil and coolant change viscosity, there's no way around it.

@sullybiker @tomey it was the Polar Vortex of perhaps 2014 or 2015 where my Subaru's steering rack froze and I couldn't drive it.

The New York Times didn't pen an article about it.

That car with Blizzaks was a tank in the snow, though

@feld @tomey Having an EV plugged in and guarding battery temps etc is just normal now isn't it? Has been since they became common.

@sullybiker@sully.site avatar

@feld @tomey I had a Skoda back in England that ever time it rained the power steering pump belt slipped and I had no power steering. I just with it.

@feld @tomey @awl Just need to pull the choke. :blobfoxthinksmart:

Oh wait, "modern" EFI vehicles don't have those. :blobfoxlaughsweat:
