horst,

One of the more annoying things for me about mastodon is that I see the same boosted entry multiple times in my timeline - sometimes directly stacked next to each other. Is that an obvious thing for me to tune in my settings maybe?

@horst
This setting (see image) perhaps and try ?

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@kofanchen @horst yes, this should help, although it’s not 100% efficient but that’s the best we have for now I think.
In some apps (eg IceCubes) you can also toggle boosts on-off, but I know that’s not exactly what you want either..

horst,

@elduvelle @kofanchen Thank you both. That option was actually already clicked. The grouping should work better somehow? I will try Phanpy too / next.

kofanchen,
@kofanchen@drosophila.social avatar

@horst Phanpy is good for quick scanning but slightly awkward layout as via Firefox/Chrome shortcut in Android but very useful as PC browser
🙏 @elduvelle the image included some of your boost 😁

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@kofanchen lol.. I do boost a lot 😅

@horst we actually discussed this point in the instance’s discord some time ago. It is definitely something we want to fix but I don’t know what the current status of it is so I’ve revived the thread there - will let you know if I have news, or you can check yourself (link to our discord should be in the “announcements”)

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@horst do you only have this problem in the local TL or other timelines too?

horst,

@elduvelle Good question - you mean "local" = neuromatch.social and "other" = any other instance, right?

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@horst well you should have a “home” timeline which shows posts from everyone you follow (including if they are on our instance (neuromatch.social) or not) and then a “local” (or “this server”) timeline which shows posts from anyone in our instance (regardless if you follow them or not) and then there is the federated timeline (which can be called “other servers”) and shows a bunch of stuff.
So I’m wondering if you have the boost issue on the local only or on other timelines too?

horst,

@elduvelle I seem to see this problem mostly with boosts from posts from other servers (just scrolled through my timeline), e.g. there is one post today from a user on @mastodon.social that pops up boosted around 5x on my local timeline.

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@horst I see, so if you look at your home timeline instead, do you have the same problem there?

horst,

@elduvelle I don't see the duplication in my home timeline - at least not in the entries I scrolled through..

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@horst okay, that makes sense! It looks like our dear admins are on it and it might get fixed… we’ll keep you updated!

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle
@kofanchen @horst
Problem is this only filters home feeds, not local, which is annoying. Shouldnt be too hard to port that logic to local feed, but just havent gotten around to it yet. PRs welcome :)

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@jonny sorry - what is PR?… @kofanchen @horst

manisha,
@manisha@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle PR - pull request
@horst - my impression is that there isn't much we can do about it. which is why I had put up this poll: https://neuromatch.social/@socialwg/111756101150597791 (see the linked github issue there). Having boosts appear in local TL is a glitch-soc feature. we can turn it off, but people voted to keep it. well at least 8/9 ppl who voted.

@jonny @kofanchen

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@manisha thanks! And yes I don’t understand why people voted to keep the boosts there… boosts are not really a reflection of the local atmosphere IMO.
I personally don’t have them showing up there (but I’m not sure what I did to get that result - maybe it’s that I’m the only local person who’s boosting stuff and I just can’t see my own boosts 😅).
@horst @jonny @kofanchen

@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle
@manisha @horst @kofanchen
I like to see them! I think its a per user account setting :). We can fix the local TL it will just take a bit of adapting the code that removes duplicate boosts, which would probably take a few hours

manisha,
@manisha@neuromatch.social avatar

@jonny it is an instance-wide setting that we enabled from the admin interface. And from the what is mentioned here, seems it will require a major re-write https://github.com/glitch-soc/mastodon/issues/2481#issuecomment-1822743099 (it's a comment from the same issue that I linked earlier)

@elduvelle I too like to see the boosts in local TL but not repeated ones. If you don't see them in the local TL (not the home TL) then maybe it's some setting on IceCubes? because on the web interface, I see repeated boosts in the local TL all the time.

@horst @kofanchen

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@manisha @jonny @horst @kofanchen hmm no I really don’t see any boosts in the local TL, even in the web interface.. let me try and find that option

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@manisha @jonny @horst @kofanchen hmm nope, can’t find it (account-specific option to hide boosts in local TL), but I definitely chose to do that at some point as I can see local boosts from my other accounts but not this account 🤔
(And not just my own boosts)

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle @manisha @horst @kofanchen oop sorry manisha didn't see you had linked earlier, didn't mean to be coming in here and just passive aggressively disagreeing and saying something hard was easy lol. i was just saying that from what i remember it seemed like a similar filtering operation could be adapted to the public feeds, so low information opinion. taking a closer look now.

this is sort of puzzling tho because i also see the instance-level "show boosts in public tl" setting but assumed since el wasn't seeing them there must also be an account-level option...

jonny,
@jonny@neuromatch.social avatar

@elduvelle @manisha @horst @kofanchen scoping this out and trying to figure out options for an implementation here: https://wiki.neuromatch.social/Filter_Duplicate_Boosts

horst,

@jonny @elduvelle @manisha @kofanchen Thanks for doing that! Great to see that this issue has some momentum ... maybe it can be solved.
