Spotify: can't pay employees or musicians
Spotify: can find $250 million for reprehensible podcaster https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/joe-rogan-renews-spotify-deal-not-exclusive-1235895424/

seawolff,

@cory Yeah this honestly makes me want to subscribe to another streaming service.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff I'm listening to local mp3s but yeah, I get the impulse.

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @cory Yeah, normally I quite like Spotify, but this kind of thing is stupid. Think of how many great podcasts they could have made with this money instead, or otherwise supported artists. JR doesn't need any more.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@hl @seawolff they shouldn't be platforming or subsidizing his nonsense. It sucks, especially given how bad it already went the first time around.

seawolff,

@cory @hl Well its not just JR. It's the fact they dont want to pay ANYONE outside of big name sensationalists. They are not prioritizing their staff, artists and/or listeners. 📉

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @hl yeah — I tend to just buy mp3s and load them onto my storage drive which is mirrored to Backblaze. If I really like something it lands in my Doppler library on macOS/iOS. I've also got more band shirts than I'd care to admit.

seawolff,

@hl @cory What is insane is lately on LinkedIn there was a thread about how "good" it was of them to offer competitive severance packages and how it should be a standard. So much brown-nosing of a company that very obviously and publicly does not have their priorities straight. I would love a rec another streaming service if yall use one.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @hl oof — didn't they get in trouble for how they handled it in the Netherlands as well? It's all gross. Apple Music is bearable but, beyond that, I've futzed around with iBroadcast as a music locker and Plex/Plexamp before going back to local storage.

seawolff,

@cory @hl I feel like the next 12 years of the web and digital will be us fighting to reclaim our digital assets such as music. Really miss my giant collection of FLAC files.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @hl haha yeah, I mostly listen at 320kbps mp3 for space's sake, but I've got quite a few flac files archived. I really fear streaming was a mistake for fans and artists and it looks like the same will be true of tv/movies.

seawolff,

@cory @hl streaming is the atypical digital service. You pay for convenience and get nothing more.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @hl it's convenient until the economics of it sour, I suppose. My favorite band has only ever had a best of compilation on streaming services, so there was always some friction there for me.

seawolff,

@cory @hl yeah I suppose that is what is happening. We don’t really have a similar economic model to compare this to.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@seawolff @hl it’s definitely one of those cyclical things where folks were drawn in based on the convenience but the demand for profit ends up destroying the thing. How many folks had perfectly solid collections that withered away too?

hl,
@hl@social.lol avatar

@cory @seawolff I guess this is where I'm a little different, and have always seen Spotify as an /additional/ music service. It's great for sharing, discovery and hearing what you want on the go - but it's not replaced buying CDs and ripping them for me, which I still do. I think of it more as a modern radio replacement, than replacing my music collection. But I'm also lucky that I can afford to do both - Irealise most just pay for a streaming service for everything.

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@hl @seawolff oh interesting — I hadn’t even considered approaching it that way but it seems like a much better fit. I don’t have a great way to share things, but mostly point folks to YouTube or Spotify if I’m just sending a track.

I’m so used to manual discovery that nothing streaming services did on that front ever made much sense to me.

@jake4480@c.im avatar

@cory never more glad I've never given that crappy company a dime. Among the MANY reasons. Crappy UI, crappy selection, crappy loading hahaha

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 haha yeah — who knew renting back your music collection could go wrong?

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@cory 😂 I was on a meeting the other day and mentioned mp3s and someone goes 'I haven't heard that term in a LONG time!' and I was like.. oh yeah? I like owning my shit. I guess that makes me old. I treasure my mp3s and FLACs hahaha

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 hahaha — I don't usually through the FLAC files on, but all of that gets tagged consistently and shoved on a drive velcroed to my monitor and then that gets mirrored up to Backblaze

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@cory oh nice! Yeah, FLACs are so huge, I reserve them for the stuff that REALLY deserves it haha

cory,
@cory@social.lol avatar

@jake4480 yeah, I've got everything as 320kbps mp3s and a subset of that library that is a part of my regular rotation sits in Doppler on my Mac and phone. Anything that doesn’t stick usually stays on the external drive unless I really can't stand it.
