I must confess that I cannot see a use for Apple Vision Pro for any sane human, unless they want to try to convince people of their total insanity by waving their hands around at objects no one else can see. It just seems like an overpriced paperweight to me.

Matthew2468,

@evilcookies98 @Kaliah totally agree.

@evilcookies98 I can see a use for it in some medical settings, eg. as a location-aware UI for medical devices on an understaffed hospital ward ("precisely which machine is beeping for attention now? Oh, look over there!"). There are other uses. But they'll take time (read: years) for specialized apps to be written. Righ tnow, Apple Vision Pro is a developer kit you pay for being marketed as if it's a finished product for PR purposes.

(I can't use one either: am partially sighted.)

Rich,

@evilcookies98 I'd like to try out a demo unit to see what the hype is all about, but I don't see myself wanting to purchase one of these things.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@Rich i’ll warn you, the voiceover gestures will give you a headache. They gave me a headache just reading about them, and I used voiceover full-time for 12 years. It’s a bunch of weird pinches and such. It’s not like doing normal gestures in the air or something like that. I read about it because I just know somebody’s going to ask.

Rich,

@evilcookies98 I don't think I'll be able to try it any time soon since it's only sold at Apple stores and my nearest one is over an hour away.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 For us, not really, but if you have little space for a gigantic monitor, you can make massive 65 inch huge things in your space without actually owning one. I've watched all the youtube vids on the subject I can, because although I don't want, need or even care about it on a personal level, it's tech, I'm geeky, and I care about tech because it's an interest of mine.
I've heard the good, the bad and the fugly and that's one of the better things people like about it. Windows anywhere in-space they could possibly want, without actually cluttering up the universe in the process.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 I just like to stay informed on a thing, even if I'll never buy it. Same goes for the Galaxy S24 phones. I'm an iPhone user first and foremost but I still watched review videos about it out of interest, and so I can converse on the subject if need-be. Not saying you should, or that you have to care at all. Just my point of view.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof I get it. I’ve just been talking to a number of family members and friends, online and not, and none of us get the point. Well, I take that back. If the audio set up is such that no one else has to hear it, then I would recommend one for the idiot. I live with who thinks it’s acceptable to crank up their death movies to mind obliterating volumes. They can clap the stupid thing on their head and let the rest of us sleep at 3 o’clock in the morning.

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @FreakyFwoof You're blind, right? When you're wearing it on your face, talking to an AI, asking it questions about what you're looking at, you'll get it. or when you can hear real-life positional earcons coming from the location of a physical object, you'll get it. You have to have a platform before you can have apps.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@bryansmart @FreakyFwoof you’re still going to look like an idiot, poking objects in the middle of the air

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @FreakyFwoof Yes, I'm aware my blindness, and how I deal with it, may be uncomfortable for some people. I'm sure they'll be okay. It isn't as if they're blind or anything. Haha

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof @bryansmart i’m using the word you in the general sense in this case. The king of England would look like an idiot, wearing one of those things and waving his hands around in the air to interact with stuff.

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @FreakyFwoof Remember when wearing a Bluetooth earpiece was strange? Enough people do it, and it's normalized. Wearing headsets will just be a thing people do. Gesturing will be as blah as when people see someone talking by themselves, then notices their Bluetooth.

FreakyFwoof,

@bryansmart @evilcookies98 I said the same thing about bluetooth, and even smartphones. They weren't normal, then they were. This conversation will seem so ridiculous in only 5 years from now, mark my words.

bryansmart,

@evilcookies98 @FreakyFwoof But, even if it looks odd, I wouldn't care. I gain way more having an AI in my ear that I can talk to about what it's seeing, than I lose by judgy people judging.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof i’m thinking of the real world implications of wearing something like that and trying to control it when there are humans around. You’re going to look like a total nut job waving your hand around at an imaginary something only you can see. I’m using the word you here in the general sense, not pointing at you specifically.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 Step back in time and think about people on the phone, pre-bluetooth. Step back in-time further and think of people on public transport pre-smart phone. WE said the same then, we said the same then then, and we say the same things now. It will become the norm. we don't have to like it, care about it or involve ourselves in it, but take about 10 giant steps back and listen to the people that said literally word-for-word the same thing about all prior major tech inventions.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof well, at least someone else could see that those existed. Lol. From where I’m sitting, if you’re in the middle of Walmart and start waving your arms around, people are going to think you’re a lunatic.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 Nah, they won't. They'll see whatever mad shit is on your face. And if you have long hair for example, or a hat on, nobody's gonna see your airpods or other wireless headphones are they? Let's be honest. Your phone could be in your pocket or bag and you could be having a shouting match to win the olympics, nobody knows if you're on the phone, mad at an underling for not delivering your stinking coffee 15 seconds earlier, or if you are genuinely a bit... woopwoop.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 'Really? You expect me to walk around talking to myself with headphones in my ears as if I'm a mad person?' It happened.

'really? you expect me to look at a stupid flat screen device on a bus or train instead of reading the newspaper or going to the phonebox to phone home? Utterly ridiculous!'
It happened.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 For the record, I too, think it's pretty damn crazy but you just know it's gonna take shape, so...

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof from where I’m sitting it also seems like a safety hazard. You know there’s going to be a scenario that plays out like this, idiot walking around with gadgets strapped to face. Idiot not paying attention to surroundings. Idiot falls off edge of cliff and smashes, gadget, face, and generally everything.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 And that already happens when idiot tourists take selfies near cliff edges... No difference from where I'm sitting. lol

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof just seems like it might become more prevalent if you can strap a world blocking device straight to your face.

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 Less contaminants in the geanpool then.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof well, there is that. We could always do with less stupid people. I would play with one just to see how stupid it makes people look, but they won’t work with my phone. As soon as I figure out what to do with the finance locked iPhone it’s going bye-bye

FreakyFwoof,

@evilcookies98 Well when you visit a store, they'll obviously have one that works with a phone there, so you can have a play. I 100% will go and see one, my son wants to as well. I do for the curiosity factor as well.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@FreakyFwoof that sadly won’t be happening. Our closest Apple Store is 2 1/2 hours away.
