I've no idea what got me thinking about this today, but one of the biggest, most beneficial changes in habits of people in the UK has to have been when smoking in indoor places was banned, particularly pubs.

I remember evenings at the pub in Hampshire, coming home and virtually ridding myself of all my clothing at the front door in order to keep the disgusting smell of cigarette smoke outside the house. The pub was such a community hub, but you paid the price in stinking 2nd hand smoke.

@HelenLockhart 100% agreement. It was also instrumental to me finally properly quitting. Pretty much every previous attempt to quit was nuked by a boozy night in a pub. Not being allowed to smoke in the pub removed that final temptation.
