@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs what if a state is decent? Resistance isn't a goal in itself, right?

@iwein @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs States are never decent. Exercising authority over people under threat of violence is never decent. They might do things you like/agree with sometimes, but they are only capable of doing those things under a framework of abusive coercion. We can do better.

@UnassumingKiwi @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs thanks, I get that there are no decent states now, but I'm hoping that it is theoretically possible to create a decent constitution. Making decisions at a continental or even global scale needs some forms of scalable collaboration. If there's that, it could be a constitution of a state in theory. Not sure I'm ready to accept that's theoretically impossible without solid proof 🙏

A constitution doesn't define a state. States are social structures. They are defined by how they operate in practice and in practice states are vehicles for a small elite class to dominate everyone else within a territory. Write whatever constitution you want, wherever you provide someone the authority to coerce others you are poisoning that social structure.

Collaboration yes, that is needed, I agree 100%. But collaboration doesn't require a state. I desire more than anything an egalitarian collaborative society. But states are systems of control, they use coercion and violence to achieve that by definition. We can make a society where that isn't the case, but it won't be (can't be) a state.

@UnassumingKiwi @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs i think we agree in principle, but I'm not sure we agree on the definition of "state" yet. It will be cumbersome to figure that out, and we should spend that time building the culture we both desire and to resist all current states 🤗 Have fun new friend!

@iwein @UnassumingKiwi A state is an association of people characterized by formal institutions of government, including laws; permanent territorial boundaries.

@iwein @UnassumingKiwi A nation is a group of people with a common language, history, and culture.

There are states, nations, and nation-states.

Indigenous tribes are nations, for example.
