Apple's reversal on the Epic situation is all well and good, but it doesn't prevent this kind of thing from happening again to a smaller developer who doesn't have a ton of PR or the ear of the EC. And it does highlight that Apple still has all the control to do whatever it wants, with little oversight, under its proposed DMA plan. They have forcibly inserted themselves in between third party app stores/payment providers and those services’ users, free to turn the screws as they wish

@stroughtonsmith And it could be easily prevented, all this mess - if Apple would allow for easy sideloading years ago.

Simple, safe, with notarization & certificates, just like on Mac. They could still revoke them as they can but nobody would ever expect Apple to allow for third-party stores on their systems 🤷‍♂️

@stroughtonsmith that’s why I doubt they are complying at all.. maliciously or not.

@stroughtonsmith “but it doesn't prevent this kind of thing from happening again” I mean, that is true for anything “ilegal”. Nothing prevents most if not all of them, other than the risk of punishment 🤷‍♂️ how do you prevent it from happening other than Apple being banned from existence?

@stroughtonsmith hey, we’re close to that one week a year where Apple tells us they love us and value us.

@stroughtonsmith Sure they reversed the ban, however, now the bullying starts;
I will eat my shoes in a tv show if everything will work as expected…

@stroughtonsmith right the simple solution is the three radio button security level in Mac OS on iOS. Hell the community might recuse iPad OS from itself with that approach.

@stroughtonsmith

Apple is an unreliable business partner, and has been that for a while already...

@stroughtonsmith the damage has been done. I don't see regulators being put at ease by this either.

@sdw @stroughtonsmith I honestly don’t even understand what is going on with Apple right now. My friend and I are building an AI note taking all for iOS, we are no where near done, but we are already scared of submitting it to the App Store. We are planing to abide by all of apples rules and all, but Apple has been unpredictable recently. Jokes on us for going all in on iOS and building the app with swift rather than a cross platform solution like Expo or flutter.
