The new @flaminghydra on A Discourse (doesn’t matter which one, really) is so disorienting. Two years ago, I would have been aware of, and known the contours of, That Discourse, because I was Too Online. I knew all Discourses.

The rhythms of the article feel familiar, almost comfortable; the dynamics of every Discourse are the same, of course, and so predictable.

@luis_in_brief For me, not being plugged into Discourse has been an unintended benefit of the Fediverse. When I get on Bsky, I find myself spending cycles “Being Online” again and it feels kind of unhealthy.

Edit: On refresh, +1 to what you said in your own reply

@neuralgraffiti no Main Character! Less entertaining, much healthier.

While reading the piece part of me has FOMO, or at least… some unsettled feeling? Like news of a foreign country: I feel I should care; it is human, and dramatic; and reflects (perhaps) some important undercurrents.

And yet I felt released reading it, because after some time away it is much more obvious how completely deranged the whole Discourse Knowing thing is/was.
