Next question is about wheel sizes from @SRLevine

Q2.For people who keep track of trends: do you think the "new" 650b/27.5" size on road/gravel bikes will ever over take the more common 700c? It seems to be getting more popular, but maybe just because I wasn't looking at all for a while...

(And for those who don't know much about it, can you tell us why this new size has become a "thing"?)

A2: That seems odd since 650b/27.5 has been dying on MTB. I'm told it's kind of dead, but I don't know, I still use 26" wheels everywhere and probably always will.

I intentionally went with 26" because they could be replaced anywhere (until the pandemic played havoc with supply chains and so any other people took up bicycling during the lockdown).

Yeah, I had a custom frame made in 2005 and 29" was starting to happen, so the guy was surprised I didn't want that but I've always been happy with 26" so...

Plus I have short legs, and I find the idea that everyone should have the same sizes and geometry kind of ridiculous.

I have a long torso, but short legs. I really have to have things set right for me, not a long legged athlete.

Same, that's actually why I had a frame built, mere weeks before the Fisher Genesis frames came out and everyone went to long top tubes shortly after.

@ascentale @SRLevine A2. I haven't really heard of the trend. I've recently gone into the 20" world with my foldie which is the opposite direction. One day it'd be neat to get a fat bike too for a winter bike, but my 700c hybrid is decent enough on anything I've ridden on.

@ascentale @SRLevine What's this new fangled 700c thing?

What’s this new fangled 700c thing?

Assuming your question is genuine, 700C is nothing new, it’s been on road bikes for decades. It’s just the French sizing. There are three standards, just to make things more complicated!

@normand @ascentale @SRLevine Just joking... my road bike is from 1987. (Originally 700x20c, but I upgraded to 700x23C a few months ago... when the original 1987 tires started to fall apart 😬)

@ai6yr @normand @SRLevine I am still amazed that it had 20c tires, but I guess they were pretty normal at the time. It's hard to imagine riding on something that skinny nowadays!

@ascentale @normand @SRLevine Even the 23c tires are MUCH cushier than the 20c tires.
