I love my bestie so much but her voice notes are so long. I’m tired and full of cold and confused by the clock change and I’ve had to text her to say that I just don’t have the capacity to listen to an 8 and a half minute message. Am I an awful person?
@purplepadma@RolloTreadway I'd expand this to say "you don't want to listen to that long" and it's irrespective of illness or impairment. That isn't very sociable or thoughtful.
I'm deaf and I have had people I know try and send me voice notes then get pissy when I ignore and don't listen to them.
I think being firmer is a very very reasonable thing. I am a bit cynical about "I statements" but this would be very straight forward to frame something like "I appreciate you wanting to show me care with voicemails but I need to let you know that I find them very stressful, especially when I am less well. Could I ask you to........."
Then if friend doesn't take that on board and respect your boundaries. You know they're not a good friend.
@purplepadma Oh god she’s out of control. Like, let me just talk at you for 12 minutes. Im genuinely curious why some people do this. One of my in-laws will sometimes send me a voice memo and I take a week to listen to it on purpose.
@tayfonay During the course of the message she will say things like, “Anyway, I’m rambling now… god I’m boring, Char, I even bore myself”. It’s pure stream of consciousness
