@jwz A supremely reductiive take on the catholic church in Poland, which I have heard from someone is from there is:

"The church helped defeat communism. In exchange they get preferential treatment on laws, taxes and sex crimes."

That quid pro quo is slowly eroding, but it's slower than in other countries.
