I often wonder: is there anyone in the UK who can show any improvements in their day-to-day life as a result of Brexit? (apart from politicians who used it to advance their careers, I mean)

I still know people who are glad Brexit happened, but it's a vague ideological approval. They can't point to anything that's got better for them concretely. In fact, some who still back it will readily complain Brexit made things worse, or at least more inconvenient, for them.

It's true of a lot of nationalist projects, I guess. People initially get excited by the "we" and the "us," but then, as time goes on, any real or imagined improvement to the standing of the nation doesn't actually help "me" at all.

And then I think, maybe it would be better if people voted a bit more selfishly. Don't try to imagine what would be "best for the country" or whatever; just think: what would be best for me and my family. Don't get fooled by simplistic "big ideas."

And don't be misled by distractions that really have no impact on my life. Does the government being nasty to refugees (or trans folks, or Muslims, or, or, or...) help me in any way? No, it doesn't. Why are politicians doing that - why are they even talking about that - instead of doing things that will help me and my family?

@andrewstroehlein sadly because hurting other people makes some people happy.

semele,

@andrewstroehlein Yes it probably would be better to focus on 'me and my family' which, to me, would include our air & water quality and so on. The actual function of a government is to render a country liveable, so that's a fair litmus test, but this Brexit thing isn't about that.

clayfoot,

@andrewstroehlein it would be better if more people just plain voted. Mandatory voting wouldn't solve every problem, but it goes a long way toward preventing extreme factions from taking and abusing power.

@clayfoot We have it here in Belgium, and, personally, I'm a big fan.

@andrewstroehlein @clayfoot yeah having moved from the UK to Australia... It makes a difference.

@andrewstroehlein Certainly there are. You'd have a point if you said GB not UK. Trade between NI and Ireland is up massively and many businesses in NI are profiting handsomely as result.

LT14GJC,

@andrewstroehlein It appears only Tory donors who made fortunes shorting the £ had their lives improved! I can't believe anyone voted for (or even believed) that utter nonsense!
