Went to see my first movie in a theater in 6 months, and I'm confident we did it safely. We waited until COVID had declined ~85% in our area. Then we bought tickets the 6th week Dune 2 was released for a noon Sunday showing. Outcome:

Only one other person in the 180-seat theater. I had my CO2 monitor, and it never went above a safe 500 ppm. (Outdoor air is just 400 ppm.) There's never a guarantee--everyone has to assess their risks and make decisions--but I loved the movie and am glad we went.

mfurlan,

@augieray looks like my dining room has a higher level of CO2 than the theater you visited. Just got my Aranet4 yesterday. The readings are interesting. Nothing over a 1000 yet.

@mfurlan was anyone in the dining room with you or previously? I think a lot of homes may be more sealed than people realize. Of course, that's good for energy efficiency, but it's bad for accumulating CO2.

@augieray
478 is impressively low for indoors. They must have an epic ventilation system.

@KanaMauna I think many movie theaters have done a lot to improve air. Then again, with just three people in a 180-seat theater, it would be hard to accumulate too much CO2 in that large a space. I wonder if it was half crowded what might have happened to the CO2 (but I'm glad I didn't find out!)

@augieray For work occasionally I have to attend meetings in crowded conference rooms. Whenever possible I monitor the CO2 on my Aranet4 and sometimes it just never stops rising, like this one from last week.

@KanaMauna Once you're in a room with people and CO2 starts rising, it isn't going to stop, unfortunately. This is why I've stopped attending conferences. (I am lucky to work remotely, however.)

@augieray Glad you were able to get out safely and see the film. I'm looking forward to the Dune 2 premiere on AppleTV this week!

mfurlan,

@augieray which C02 monitor do you suggest?

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@mfurlan I'm not enough of an expert to recommend one or another, but I got the Aranet4, which seems the most trusted brand of people who take this seriously.

@andymoose@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray if they had 3am showings I would totally go.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@andymoose I don't know about you, but I'm not sure that I could do a 2.5-hour movie at 3 am and stay awake. :)

andymoose,
@andymoose@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray for this particular movie I would try. Caffeinated and well rested beforehand. I’m a night owl anyway - I think I could do it!

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@andymoose I go to bed pretty late, but I have to draw my line at 1 am! 😴 😆

andymoose,
@andymoose@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray my bedtime is determined by a random number generator (aka a young child, work, pain levels)

As an aside, while we hoped to have very few people in the theater, we were happy to share the movie with just one other person. According to PMC19.com, there is a 1% chance that a single individual has COVID right now.

I forgot that I took a couple of photos of the lobby and the theater in which we were sitting. Not exactly what I would call crowded for the first showing of the day at noon!

The theater we went to has 18 screens, and we MAYBE saw 12 people in the place. Only one was in our movie, and the lobby was a ghost town at noon on a Sunday.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray Wow that theater hasn't changed much since I worked there 20 years ago...

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@grimmy Well, it used to have video games back then. I miss them.

@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray yeah they used to be in the center of your picture then they moved them to the left. Not sure when they removed them as that was after I left. I used to be responsible for emptying the quarters out of them . 😁

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@grimmy I was responsible for putting quarters in them!

@augieray I still have not watched it, avoided the crowded days, then got busy. It seems safe to go now... Was it good?
