It is indeed an odd experience to be part of the 1% of the human population who was not swept up by the craze and kept failing to be swept up by it despite numerous times trying to.

I tried reading the novel, watched the donghua and even the and could not last more than a couple of episodes. People tell me to "soldier on" for a few more EPs but I couldn't I just couldn't.

Also tried reading the author's other books & just 😴

I think my 🧠 is built diff or something

@liztai People like different things, it's fine. Just let it go. People talk about things they enjoy. They hardly linger on things they don't, unless it's popular but they hate it. It was out during initial covid lockdowns, it was a lot of en circles first Chinese drama, the novel it's based on was many people's first danmei novel so the timing of it was perfect. You don't have to watch something you don't enjoy. If you've tried a few episodes, and it's not for you, then it's not for you. I didn't like the show but I know exactly why I didn't like the show and it's probably for different for you and I've also learnt to accept not liking some really popular books because I'm just not the target audience. And that's okay

@geraineon but but I would like to understand why people like it 😆

@liztai I didn't finish watching the show. I liked the novel for the characters and relationships and I found the story interesting. I like how the tragedy is set up. There are some things I don't like about the novel too but my overall experience was enjoyable. The official tl has some issues. I didn't read the seven seas version so idk how well those reads.

Again, it's perfectly okay to not like. Just means it's not for you and that's okay!

@geraineon I did try the Seven Seas version, and part of what out me off is the er, Americanisms that occasionally pop up. It took me out of the moment and made the novel feel very juvenile 😅

@liztai I like it first of all because of the way the story sets up so many clashing but inescapable relationships and responsibilities between characters that there's no way all of them can be satisfied. It made me very invested in the different ways each character tried to navigate that. That's a kind of story I love but don't find all that often.

I'm also staggeringly weak for the tropes of secret identities and characters trying to make a new life in the shadow of their violent past, and MDZS delivered on that, haha. I was pretty much doomed to like it for that alone.

I liked the Untamed a lot because of the chemistry between the actors, and because it was so pretty! It was also interesting to see how it was adapted from the novel, since my watching and reading overlapped somewhat.

@liztai MDZS was my first webnovel and CQL was my first modern cdrama, so it's hard to say how I'd have found them if that hadn't been the case. I definitely think it helped at first that the fandom was so intense (first just me and my girlfriend being intense about it at home, and then I found out people were talking about it a lot online), because there was a lot of analysis and meta about the stories and characters that pulled me in to thinking about it more and more. That's something very specific to the time when it came out that you couldn't really replicate otherwise, imo.

Oh, and I personally was especially happy to find MDZS/CQL because xianxia was new to me, but I'd been into wuxia for a while—I was just struggling to find a way in to any wider community for it. Again, that's something that MDZS/CQL becoming a craze helped me with that's more on the personal side. I'm pretty sure you didn't need that way in!

@liztai I definitely understand the feeling of everyone around you being extremely into something you don't understand, and wanting to know what they see in it!! That's me with kpop 99% of the time. All my friends are posting about kpop bands and I'm just :blobcatfakeverified:

@liztai @geraineon I feel like this primer is a good explanation of what a lot of people like about the show https://readingtheend.com/2020/02/01/the-untamed-a-primer/

@LianaBrooks somehow you feel like, what are they seeing that I am not? In the end I can only give up and declare this as one of the biggest mysteries in the universe 😆

@loke it is a hyper popular Cdrama with lots of homoerotic subtext 😁
