Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. I was 10 years old. Put in perspective the fact that until I was 10, abortion was illegal. So, I began my life without bodily autonomy. I had it from ages 10 - 60, and now I’m back at square one, without any. This RIGHT didn’t even exist for one person’s entire lifetime.

First, I knew this was your post before I even saw who wrote it 😁

Second, OMG I just said this to my niece yesterday. I added that during all my years when I was physically capable of becoming pregnant, I had control over my body (to a certain point) throughout the entire country. That it is awful that she doesn't have that right and we're living in a patriarchy that has laws against women

@StillIRise1963 East Germany legalised abortion in 1972. West Germany followed two years later, but that was repealed again after another year by the constitutional court. So as of 1975 abortion was legal in East Germany (had been for 3 years), illegal in West Germany.

East German women therefore lost their legal right to abortion when the two German countries were reunited in 1990.

The current German law against abortion goes back to the 1930s.

@rainynight65 I didn’t know any of that. Thanks for the knowledge. I just read an article about the situation and one of the scarier points was that abortion was no longer taught in medical schools.

@StillIRise1963 I was 17. It was a relief to know my girlfriend and I would have choices should we have the misfortune of an unwanted pregnancy. Then, in my 30s, I had a daughter who I thought would have choices/rights. Now our rights are being eroded. It's little solace that my nurse friend told me to tell my daughter that she knows people (drs & nurses in OBGYN). Really? Is that the best I can hope for her?

@leftvu Nice work! This is all great. Free contraception is a game changer.

Now I have to be terrified for our daughters.

@StillIRise1963 Sorry to read about the rolling back of women’s rights to bodily autonomy in USA. https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/3/22/the-us-war-on-reproductive-rights-should-concern-women-everywhere
Nice touch to relate your personal story to that of the rolling back of women’s rights- thanks!
We all have to bravely fight for such rights!
USA women may have to go to Canada or Mexico for abortions, in future.

@StillIRise1963 on the bright side women have been able to vote for a few generations before they take that away from us. Why the fuck are we letting them take our shit?

@StillIRise1963 This is always what gets me about kiddos and how adults treat or make decisions for them...

Adults do stuff like this ^^ and the kids grow up thinking it is normal and good actually

Not even thinking outside of that or that it could be different...

It effectively kills change or resistance movements (which is exactly what the SC is going for)

especially if it is their whole life instead of partial where they know better (think 9/11 laws and everyone born after) 🤔

@Aviva_Gary We’re not handing down knowledge. We’re not sharing enough for people to understand each other and the struggles that bring us where we are. It’s easy to criticize the place, but to understand the place, you have to understand what we lived before. It’s the only way to know where you are, and who you are in it, so you can make the appropriate choices for yourself. We don’t share enough.

@StillIRise1963 @Aviva_Gary too true -- and this probably has something to do with the way people of different generations mix so much less frequently than in the old days when families and neighbors were tighter and people would tell stories for entertainment instead of isolating in their phones yadda yadda get off my lawn... seriously though, societies than are more collectivist than individualist tend to know and understand their own histories better because they are tended to and handed down, oral transmission and all of that...

@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@rothko Yep. It makes sense. Time. Time for things to come up. They’ve stolen time from us which steals us from us.

@StillIRise1963 @Aviva_Gary Yes, this is so important! I made a point of telling young co-workers what my mother, now 90-yo, and I experienced in the workplace, before laws and policies were in place to discourage discrimination and harassment. They were shocked. In my last years, I also told them it's their job to continue to fight to protect what our generation established and advance the battleground. The fight for freedom and equality spans generations, and complacency is surrender.

@StillIRise1963 Ouch! What an ugly full circle that is!

@cub80_appleby I’m extremely lucky it existed during the years I could have kids because without it, I could have died at 21 from an ectopic pregnancy and I wouldn’t have my IVF created twins.
