Yesterday my gf and I went to the wedding of her cousin who just a little younger than us, end 20-ish

And the guy marrying (who shares the same name with me😆) told me that they tried to get as much second hand, free and recycled goods for the wedding like chairs, glasses etc

And the overall vibe was so cozy! All with "custom" items basically for almost no money!

He said that hiring glasses would costs 40 cents per glass and buying them second hand 20 cents. And they even can return them 💪 ♻️

I think Americans are remiss in not mandating learning foreign languages in our education system, but these days, we seem to have ditched the idea of including education in our education system. 🙄

@fkamiah17 Beto gave it a good shot, but he never stood a chance at winning over any good ol' boys who might have been on the fence. The influx of California Libs might have tipped the balance but they flee soon after their first hotter'n'hell summers here. I like Allred, seems like a solid guy, but I'm not holding my breath. Bubba and his tribe are frightened, angry, threatened, and murder in their hearts waxes stronger every week. The more GOP rot is exposed, the deeper they entrench in it. 🤨🤪

@fkamiah17 Before Texas goes blue--or even magenta--we need a much heftier voting wedge of people who want change, will work for it, and will vote for it. This state has been about white male patriarchy and wealth most of its history, and those benefitting from power will stoop to any amount of dirty tricks to hold it. This is why education and women's health especially are unsupported here. The No Child Left Behind policy that started mass erosion of national public education started here.

@fkamiah17 I wouldn't want to offend by muddling in Brit politics, but yeah, I esteem the Tories about as much or less than I do our Texas GOP. They did a real number on you guys with Brexit, disastrous for the nation. Hubby and I are anglophiles, and it breaks my heart to read about the suffering the British people are enduring subsequent to Brexit. Winter especially seemed brutal, too many choosing food or heat. Barbaric. Thought we had all evolved further than this. 😔

@fkamiah17 Empathy, hugs, and a comforting cuppa to you, friend. Our mutual conservative governments couldn't care less about the public they're sworn to serve, whether we have shelter, food, medical care, education--civilization, in short. They're masterful manipulators of fear, using it like a scalpel to cut away not only the threads that bind the fabric of society, but even the memory of that fabric. Dangerous country for all of us, and I fervently hope we can turn this around.

@StillIRise1963 Hearing is scheduled for Mon., 4/22, wherein Letitia James formally challenges the validity of Trump's fraud case bond in Court. Shaping up to be an interesting week. Prosecutors in the hush money case argue two days later, Wed., 4/24, that Trump violated the gag order in the hush money case (he clearly has, multiple times). I doubt any financial penalties will shut that fool up; also doubt Merchan will jail him on first out (drat). There's not enough popcorn! 🤭

@StillIRise1963 I read that today Trump is whining that the hush money jury selection courtroom was freezing. It occurred to me that this may be a deliberate move to prevent him from falling asleep during proceedings. Probably not, but it's an entertaining thought. 🤔🤭

@StillIRise1963 Yep. But really, crazy is in our rearview mirror. This is surreal, like we all woke up in a checkerboard Dali landscape draped with melting clocks and a sky plastered with giant eyeballs and scissors. The world is tilted on a vertiginous axis, and the only thing that can set it right for me personally will be to see justice done and those responsible brought to account. I thought the Nixon scandals were disruptive and absorbing, but this...this is a whole new level. 😬

Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. I was 10 years old. Put in perspective the fact that until I was 10, abortion was illegal. So, I began my life without bodily autonomy. I had it from ages 10 - 60, and now I’m back at square one, without any. This RIGHT didn’t even exist for one person’s entire lifetime.

@StillIRise1963 @Aviva_Gary Yes, this is so important! I made a point of telling young co-workers what my mother, now 90-yo, and I experienced in the workplace, before laws and policies were in place to discourage discrimination and harassment. They were shocked. In my last years, I also told them it's their job to continue to fight to protect what our generation established and advance the battleground. The fight for freedom and equality spans generations, and complacency is surrender.

It's not worth allowing my, or other people's, data to be mined by Meta and sold to third parties without our consent, often without our knowledge. I sincerely hope the account will explore the benefits of running an account in the fediverse that isn't tied in through Zuckerberg's malignant social network.

At the risk of reigniting a debate that has been had in my timeline in the past... here's a report of a University of Valencia that looked at over 20 paper examine the differential effects of reading digitally & on paper.

The research confirms my experience (my own & in the reading of my erstwhile students) that reading digitally is less likely to lead to long-term educational (knowledge) benefits...

@purplepadma @nusher @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Yes. For kinetic learners like myself, engaging with printed matter results in much greater retention of information than reading digital media. I highlight passages. If I have trouble focusing on content, I pencil notes and comments in the margins. I benefit from that spatial sense of where specific passages or data are located within the pages, or even on a specific page. For me, digital reading for pleasure, but printed matter is for serious work.

@RickiTarr We enjoyed the second Downton Abbey movie, but we're both fans of the series. It's not PC, but we both love Gone With the Wind. Oh, that Scarlett O'Hara sure is a caution!
