nobody made this big of a deal when it was Toyota. Or how about the Audi 5000

@feld Yes, it's really not that unusual in modern cars. Tesla derangement syndrome is a thing.

tk,

@feld I mean, luxury cars aren't known to sell in huge numbers. :blobfoxthonking:

@sun @feld really though: a recall of 3800 isn't so bad

some of the bigger recalls were orders of magnitude more than that

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@jeffcliff @sun people are like OMG HAHA THEY ONLY MADE 3800 OF THEM HAHA I HOPE EVERYONE AT TESLA LOSES THEIR JOBS, THEIR AMERICAN JOBS, HAHA FUCK THESE PEOPLE SEND ALL THE JOBS BACK TO CHINA BECAUSE I HATE ELON HAHA

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@jeffcliff @feld I mean though: is there a named fallacy for presenting a number like it's meaningful and ignoring other events with similar numbers? I guess just "dishonesty"

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@sun @jeffcliff it’s 100% the "fuck cars" crowd just auto-fellating over every negative car-related thing they can find, with bonus money shots if it somehow involves Elon :shrug:

The Cybertruck isn’t even that big. I was disappointed when I saw it.

Cybertruck:
Width: 70.5"
Length: 223.7"

F150 Long Bed:
Width: 79.9" without mirrors, 95.7" with mirrors
Length: 227.7"

F250 Crew Cab Long Bed:
Width: 105.9" with standard mirrors, 80" without
Length: 266.2"

It’s just not a big truck. If you’ve lived in communities with trucks the Cybertruck is a joke.

@feld @jeffcliff what's the deal with the car washes disabling it though?

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@sun @jeffcliff I can only guess that high pressure of water is getting somewhere it shouldn't. This is a massive engineering fail

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@feld @jeffcliff It's really bad but at the same time I suspect it's really hard to make a new automobile from scratch.

@sun @feld @jeffcliff I remember talks of hydrogen cars I wonder what happened to that

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@iceloops @sun @jeffcliff California had them, the fueling stations are shutting down. The experiment is pretty much over IMO.

Equivalent hydrogen price to a gallon of gas was ~$15 and Biden tried to do a $7 subsidy but that's not enough. It may have its use in more heavy duty scenarios but not really for passenger cars.

jeffcliff,
@jeffcliff@shitposter.world avatar

@iceloops @sun @feld we had hydrogen busses in when i was in highschool

i think they were marginally more expensive than gas ones so eventually got replaced

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@jeffcliff @iceloops @sun There's no real way to make hydrogen cheap. We don't do anything at scale where it's a byproduct we could capture.

Desalination maybe in the future but that's still hampered by the cost of energy to do the desalination in the first place.

Storing energy in batteries will always be cheaper than using energy to make hydrogen, then back to less energy than you started with. People don't get this. They'll say "oh we can do all this solar to run the hydrogen operation" -- ok great but you make more money by putting the solar into batteries.

AIUI You don't want to make hydrogen from saltwater either, and we have concerns about our long term access to fresh water...

I have a bunch of links of hydrogen operations that exist, their issues, nobody buying it except for small tests, hydrogen trains in Europe canceling (Germany I think?), etc

iceloops,
@iceloops@shitposter.world avatar

@feld @jeffcliff @sun yeah building a solar farm to make hydrogen is dumb sure it's renewable but also expensive

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@iceloops @jeffcliff @sun If we really want this we need a HUGE war-level effort of resources to make small fusion reactors a reality and economical. Make us truly energy independent. It doesn't matter if the rest of the world has all the oil if we have nearly-free energy to do anything we want with.

Maybe there will be a "war on oil" political movement like this. Time will tell

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@feld @iceloops @jeffcliff is there indication that fusion is viable? it seems like along time has been spent for modest gains

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@sun @iceloops @jeffcliff This article covers how we don't need additional physics breakthroughs to make it viable and stuff
