Thinking of celebrating the new job during the weeks, with a new gaming GPU for the weekends and evenings 🤔🙃

Current system is a i7-8700 w/ RTX 2070 Super (details: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/bitprophet/saved/#view=npJvVn).

Interestingly, when playing eg CP2077 with medium-ish settings + raytracing, the GPU appears bored and the CPU nearly pegged (according to taskmanager), which tells me naively that maybe I need to upgrade everything /but/ the GPU instead. And lo, on checking I find everything-but-the-GPU are from 2018!

@bitprophet they make that overdrive adapter that lets you put a pentium chip into a 486, maybe you can get a few more miles out of the current motherboard

@RangerRick I know 2018 is a while ago but it's rather rude to imply an LGA1151-socket board is on the same level as a 486! 🤣

But also, good point, I'm so used to the tech changing dramatically every ~5 years, I didn't even stop to think about whether I could reasonably just swap out the CPU. Will look!

@RangerRick huh, nope, my initial inclination was accurate: LGA socket classes change every couple CPU generations. I can only go up one gen, seems like. oh well!

@bitprophet you can probably pick up an enterprise desktop/tower with a 10th or 11th gen i7 that can accommodate a full height card for like $500. I.e. Optiplex or EliteDesk or ThinkStation.

carey,

@zrail @bitprophet Cyberpunk 2077 wants a 12th gen i7 according to its official specs, though I found it OK (raytracing off) with my Ryzen 7 4800H which is supposed to be equivalent to 11th gen.

What it really wants is at least 8 GB of VRAM. It's not thrilled on my laptop that 4GB of that is shared.

@carey @zrail my 2070 Super (the PCPP link in previous toot may be to the original 2018 build, which had a 970) has 8G VRAM, but if CP77’s recommended CPU is a whole 4 generations newer than my 8700, that might explain a few things 🤪

This is unfortunate, as I really don't have the energy for a full system rebuild right now. Might just get an RTX 4070/ish anyways, in case my naive performance observation is wrong; then can upgrade everything else around it later? 🥴 like, it wouldn't be a waste of money or anything. So I tell myself…

@bitprophet ultimate feels. i have a 1 tb NVME ssd on the underside of my motherboard that doesn't work and probably just needs to be reseated, but i'd have to take /everything apart/ to reach it and who has the time.

i'll get that tb back in my next build i guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@ok_devalias it’s just one terabyte, Michael, what could it cost? ten dollars?
