What can I do to get better at reading out loud?

andrea0307,

@evilcookies98 start with something you enjoy to get comfortable with reading aloud and go from there.

@andrea0307 noted. I thought of taking baby steps and not starting with war and peace or something like that.

@evilcookies98 Um, practice? And practice?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@VE3RWJ so it’s not too late to figure this thing out?

crazydutchy,

@evilcookies98 Good question, since I can't read out loud either, I don't have the answer but hope you will find someone who does.

@crazydutchy @evilcookies98 My advice would be to do it a lot. The more you do it, the better you will get. I know it’s a cliche, but some cliches are true. Good luck!

crazydutchy,

@Woodyanna @evilcookies98 I also think, reading from braille is far easier than reading out loud from speech. I know I can't do it well.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@crazydutchy @Woodyanna I tried that approximately one time and realized it was never going to work. Fortunately, I have a good sized display now so I might actually get somewhere.

@evilcookies98 the only thing I can think of is keep practicing. you will eventually get there.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@JamminJerry i’m going to now that I have more room to read. I’ve been upgraded in terms of braille display length. I just don’t know what kind of material to practice with. Something tells me the brailleNote empower User guide, which I pulled from the way back machine, is not the best idea.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @JamminJerry It's not as much the material you choose but if you feel comfortable with it.

JamminJerry,
@JamminJerry@mastodon.stickbear.me avatar

@ratking @evilcookies98 well there is that too.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @JamminJerry i’m not sure I feel necessarily comfortable with anything. Every time I tried to read out loud when I was younger, I was silenced or had the book taken away.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @JamminJerry That's a first, we were expected to read out loud in school, a lot.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@JamminJerry @ratking my aid was kind of a butt hole

JamminJerry,
@JamminJerry@mastodon.stickbear.me avatar

@evilcookies98 @ratking only kind of?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@JamminJerry @ratking I never know if there are younger ears listening, so I try to refrain from the strong language, unless I’m extremely aggravated, in which case I am not in the mental state to care who is listening.

JamminJerry,
@JamminJerry@mastodon.stickbear.me avatar

@evilcookies98 you could try reading books, or hell just try reading mastodon or telegram messaages out loud. just some thoughts for you.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@JamminJerry might not be a bad idea.

@evilcookies98 Practice, practice, practice.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 I wish I knew what to practice with. I don’t have a lot of nursery rhymes on me right now after all.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 Are there any short stories you can use to practice reading out loud with?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 not exactly sure. I lost most of my practice material when my first e-reader went into the toilet by deciding to get stuck in an I’m not going to boot state. I don’t even remember what I had stored on it. My goal is to get through the Grinch this Christmas without stumbling over every other line or having to press the pan key 6000 times because they left half the page blank.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 From what I understand, those books can be DAISY files or, BRF files on both services. Don't quote me, I could be wrong.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 which would explain why the navigation sucks in everything I’ve downloaded from the national library service. It’s not marked up.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 What about Bookshare?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 with the app I have I can make those work. The display I have now is solely a display and doesn’t have any of the standalone software, which is kind of a relief. I don’t need all those extra bells and whistles. I need it to make the connection to my stuff and display the stuff I need to read.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 Good, goood, can your Braille display connect to your e-reader?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 I highly doubt it. That thing has a display of its own so it wouldn’t go for that.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 Oh, so, it has it's own Braille display?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 it does, but I wanted a bigger one, and getting another one was an absolute necessity for connecting it to my phone. The software for the reader itself is designed in such a way that it would rather leave half the display blank, then split a word, and considering it only has 20 cells to work with, it’s kind of pointless. I’m not ungrateful, but I am irritated.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 Ah, I understand where your coming from. Not enough Braill realistate.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 that’s the government for you.

carrottop1023,
@carrottop1023@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 I could be wrong but, I think some of their stuff is marked up, I know that they have watermarks to notify them of the items downloaded by the person's account.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@carrottop1023 if you put it into the right app on your phone, you can have the text scrolling across the screen, which means the display will pick it up and you can read it.
