I tried my hand at just using LaTeX, but have sort of fallen back on just using normal desktop publishing software. I'd love to read a "Julia makes a zine about making zines" adventure. (Obviously if that doesn't interest you at all, do not feel the need to even acknowledge it, I think it'd would just be a neat zine coming from you)
