A Tesla owner has been charged with vehicular homicide for killing a motorcyclist while browsing the web on their phone while the car was on Autopilot. According to the driver he was “putting the trust in the machine to drive for him,”

The naming of this feature kills people.

@carnage4life I’m never going to drive a Tesla but as a cyclist I feel I’m participating in this company’s beta test in the worst possible way

@carnage4life names do not help, people are dumb, like the person who bought an RV, started driving, activated «cruise control» and left the driver’s seat to go make a coffee or something because they thought that, too, was supposed to act like an autopilot, but ended up in a ditch.

goatsarah,

@carnage4life Do ... people think that autopilot on planes and boats, where the term comes from, does anything much more complicated than "hold this course and this speed"? I have a boat. Autopilot has three modes:

1 - go to this lat/long in a straight line, regardless of what's in the way

2 - follow this compass heading, regardless of what's in the way

3 - hold this angle to the wind, regardless of what's in the way

I think people who have never had first hand experience of actual real autopilots are severely overestimating what it is they actually do. They're basically just cruise control for boats and planes.

hankg,

@carnage4life @goatsarah Agreed that people need to understand the limitations of things. But Musk didn't just have them call it "autopilot" or "driver assist" they had them call it "full self driving". He also put out BS videos of the cars supposedly driving themselves. I know a few Tesla owners that basically just put it in FSD mode and then browse the internet, read their phones, etc. in rush hour traffic. These are people that should know better too. They bought into the whole Tesla BS campaign on this feature. It's sort of like the friend that insists that they are actually a better driver when they are drunk because they pay attention more. Maddening. But at least the alcohol companies weren't pitching that mentality as a feature of their products.

goatsarah,

@hankg @carnage4life he’s a fecking eejit, and so are they.

My Leaf has the same capabilities more or less. Once every thousand kilometres or so it tries to kill me.

Computers aren’t scared of dying. People need to understand that.

hankg,

@carnage4life @goatsarah I'm watching some snippets of the latest quarterly earnings call and apparently mid-sentence Musk switched from calling it "full self driving" to "supervised full self driving". Something is up...maybe the sting of that lawsuit they just settled or maybe more. TBD.

@hankg

Good. It's about time blatant lies in advertising were punished.

@carnage4life @goatsarah

hankg,

@carnage4life Exactly! It is shocking to me that Tesla has been able to get away with calling it that for so long. IIRC they've never even put in paperwork for anything beyond Level 2 self driving to regulatory agencies. So it's not even a real aspirational thing for their software. It is pure marketing crap.

@carnage4life "This is full self driving but of course you are still responsible if our system fails." 🙄

@kaffeeringe @carnage4life Yeah, I don't think any system should be called "full self driving" until the company that produced it takes full responsibility of it's actions.
