Trying to help a friend get from Madrid to Paris 8 June. And I want to 😭

€122 for the best timed TGV train to Paris €97 is the cheapest
Cheapest flights from €43
Other flights €54 - €74

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon Yes, but one of those choices is going to be fucking misery, and the other one is going to be beautiful views, free internet access, and a picnic which can contain a bottle of wine and a corkscrew.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@apicultor yes I know. But this person has limited financial means!

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon Don't forget to add a few euro in Madrid and at least twelve in Paris to actually get back into the city.

If you are booking very close to departure, then the price isn't great either way.

Did you look at Madrid-Lyon via Renfe and then a Freccia or Ouigo from there to Paris?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@apicultor Sure, I calculated all that in. Timetable to Lyon is crap - the 2 Renfe trains are too early and too late. I’d have done it by train still, but there are people among my friends less committed!

plaindocs,
@plaindocs@chaos.social avatar

@jon it's sooo hard to argue the case. You mean the flight takes a quarter of the time, and costs a quarter as much...

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@plaindocs at least if this were - say - France-Germany it'd not be so eye wateringly expensive

plaindocs,
@plaindocs@chaos.social avatar

@jon true. And now the strikes in Germany seem to be over for a while you've got a better chance of making it to the destination.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@plaindocs also in Germany even if your ICE breaks down there are normally alternatives. France-Spain the high speed line has just 4 trains a day!

plaindocs,
@plaindocs@chaos.social avatar

@jon my friends who used to do UK to Portugal every year eventually gave up and bought a camper van.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@plaindocs yes, can relate. France-Spain-Portugal is my least favourite cross border rail of all! I am glad I am done with all of that in my project!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

And note: this NOT only misplaced subsidy. It's also SNCF being malevolent, Renfe being crap, and EU rail liberalisation not having worked to get other operators to be able to run here.

smveerman,
@smveerman@zug.network avatar

@jon And probably the € 4000 in fees one has to pay to run one train on the Perpignan - Figueres high speed line.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@smveerman Sure, that doesn't help. But - especially summertime - I think you could still profitably run a few more.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @smveerman

I've had it twice last year that the only (!) connection from Barcelona that still let's me travel onward to Germany was sold out. In both classes. Sucked big time. It all depends on too few seats on a single train.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@knud @smveerman “travel onward to Germany” is your error. Shame on you 1) for not going to Paris, and 2) connecting with some other train!

davidlinssen,
@davidlinssen@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @smveerman I’m reading this on board of one of those twice-a-day direct TGVs, on the Perpignan-Figueres high speed line, and looking at how crowded this off-season train is, I think that triple the capacity would still be profitable. Bring in the competition!

davidlinssen,
@davidlinssen@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @smveerman also: can they please stop saying ‘thanks for choosing the most ecological way of transport’ at each station. We know. Stop preaching to the converted. We are the ones using trains. Maybe advertise for those not knowing. And: it’s not a choice for everyone!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@davidlinssen @smveerman SNCF ought to make fewer inane announcements full stop!

fheinderyckx,
@fheinderyckx@mastodon.social avatar

@jon
Absurd. Misplaced public subsidies die hard, even in a climate emergency.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@fheinderyckx As does SNCF being a damned malevolent train company.

lewd,
@lewd@zug.network avatar

@jon Petition to enforce air flights to be more expensive than the average train price. And make that as a tax so that we can invest it into railways.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd and also screw damned SNCF and Renfe, both incapable or unwilling to run more trains

fishter_uk,
@fishter_uk@mastodon.scot avatar

@jon @lewd It's not track capacity that's the issue here. It may be rolling stock, but that's "easily" solved. It's just political will.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@fishter_uk @lewd which in France is totally missing to fix shit like this. Sadly.

lewd,
@lewd@zug.network avatar

@jon And both especially unwilling to run cooperation trains.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@lewd Yes. Although there is a bit of bad luck (or bad choices?) for Renfe in this - had the Talgo series 106 been OKed perhaps there would be a few more services? But I expect nothing of SNCF.

Schleifleistenbruch,
@Schleifleistenbruch@zug.network avatar

@jon @lewd Do you expect anything of :iryo: ?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Schleifleistenbruch @lewd I do. But they have other plans before France-Spain. But generally yes, Trenitalia keeps buying more Frecciarossa 1000 trains, the finances are solid, and the attitude good. So medium term, yes, but not short term.
