My current nightmare is that the Tories will be hammered so hard this Thursday that the back benches will run a leadership challenger against Sunak ...

… And the party rank and file will then vote Liz Truss in again as party leader.

She's had a year to lick her wounds and work out what she did wrong, and in her tiny mind it can only be that she didn't do everything fast enough and hard enough.

So we'll get a Liz Truss equivalent of the US Republicans' Project 2025.

LIZ TRUSS 2.0:

Day 1: push Thames Water into bankruptcy. (Fuck the pension funds.) This triggers a run on sterling and an interest rate rise, but who cares?

Day 2: doubles defense spending and abolishes inheritance tax and the top income tax band to fund it.

Day 3: bans gender transition, homosexuality, and abortion.

Day 4: privatizes the BBC, announces full NHS privatization and "users pay" model.

Day 5: abolishes PIP payments. Bankrupt councils to be forced to re-org as "free ports".

@cstross She already hired you as a political advisor? 😱
That was fast! Is that what the New Management really is? A thinly veiled front, telling war stories from the political think tank you run on the side?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@rlcw Oh no, the New Management is much more rational! With an Elder God in charge and human sacrifices every Thursday, there is government by a competent evil! After all, the cruelty is the entire point, not an accidental by-product.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross I mean, would she survive to day3? because "fuck pension funds" sounds ok until that starts to happen....

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@Di4na At this point the Tory party membership are so divorced from reality that reality is trying to get a restraining order against them.

Di4na,
@Di4na@hachyderm.io avatar

@cstross Not wrong, but also the moment your pension fund calls you to tell you, "So you will not get a payment ever anymore", it kinda focuses the mind. And after the last time, I am not sure the funds would not do that.

Also technically, you only need enough MP to panic to block her. It is not like it is a big majority rn....

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@Di4na That has its own bad outcome.

If there's Truss then a sudden election, the Tories get wiped out. Which opens the door to Reform UK as the new opposition party, i.e. outright fascists.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@cstross worst part is I can absolutely see her doing at least those last three as top priorities.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

Oh, I forgot: an obvious Truss policy is to downsize the entire civil service by 80% and replace them with AI. I mean, if it worked for Elon Musk at Twitter it can work for the UK, right?

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross oh christ on a bike, it's just occurred to me that for a 45 day period we had nuclear submarines floating about in the ocean with a letter of last resort with instructions provided by Truss

angusm,
@angusm@mastodon.social avatar

@zip @cstross If she gets a second term, the Admiralty will probably just issue all the subs with a letter that reads “In case of emergency, ask the lettuce what to do.”

@HighlandLawyer@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross
Plus it's actually 100% of current civil servants, because there's no place for civil service neutrality; those 20% of jobs will be given to sound political supporters of the govt in restoration of the "spoils" system.

GCogman,

@cstross Oh, I’m sure they wouldn’t do that (she says innocently). I mean, there must surely be other Tory candidates out there with experience, intelligence and support.

Surely.

It can’t be that pretty much the entire Tory party is as sensible and reliable as a turnip riddled with maggots and out touting for additional corruption.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@GCogman The maggots have mad cow disease.

gpshewan,
@gpshewan@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross current thinking not Sunak will call an election the minute a whiff of a serious leadership challenge comes?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@gpshewan It depends if he's given time to figure out his next move.

dougs,
@dougs@nd2.uk avatar

@cstross to be quite clear: this is in no way a valid argument against hammering them. We should absolutely drive them out of public life at every opportunity.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@dougs Yes absolutely, I'm just worried that Reform UK are the likely long-term beneficiaries and they're actually worse than the Tory party of yore.
