That thing where your publisher sends you a congrats card for making an award shortlist. And it comes with a gift box full of amazing artisanal macaroons.

Which would be great if not for the fact that (a) I'm diabetic and (b) my spouse is vegan (hint: macaroons contain eggs, which are not vegan) and (c) spouse is also allergic to eggs.

(This is a subset of the "my aunt always sends me a pair of socks she knitted for Christmas, and they don't fit" etiquette problem!)

I seem to recall the Bell case visited the argument that if you let teens start transition they'll continue, as though this meant that they were started on a path they otherwise wouldn't have gone down rather than started earlier on a path they were always going to go down.

Delaying puberty was always a compromise with cis people. Perhaps some folks can go either way on what hormones they mainline but if you'd given me a baseline for comparison when I was 14 I'd have known then and there

@zip@wandering.shop avatar

When I got on HRT it took about a week for the gender euphoria to hit. A week later I got spooked by the fear of clots and stopped ... a week after that I started again because I'd had a taste of what not having poison in my veins feels like.

It's like a loud background noise you've learned to tune out suddenly stopping and the government is worried that someone might turn on the loud annoying buzzing machine on purpose and keep it on for years and then announce they regret it

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

This lot are apparently unaware that the GIC was a baited trap. It's a fucking catch and release program. The deal is simple: instead of getting hormones off some drag queens in Soho and getting all queer and political you get your medical needs met by the clinic as long as you can commit to looking normal where they can see it and, historically, as long as you "go the whole way".

The GIC exists to supervise because they don't like what we get up to unsupervised.

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

Anyway.

"Puberty blockers" aka the stuff that suppresses your body's own hormone production at any age are a compromise. You don't get the right puberty but you don't get the wrong one either.

Transfem HRT is readily available. Monotherapy works just fine.

What do they suppose will happen when they remove the compromise from the table so the only options are the wrong puberty or buying some shit off the internet and hiding it from your parents?

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

So I guess we're back to the old system except turbocharged by the internet: a lot of teens will suffer inexpressible body horror while feeling helpless and knowing their agency has been taken away by adults, great plan, nothing can go wrong there. And then some of them will run into the arms of the kinds of adults willing to offer access to HRT and who will knowingly risk a kidnapping charge to shelter a teen who can't hide the changes anymore. There's your fucking safeguarding concern.

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

In conclusion your children are actually small humans with agency and not some kind of pet that can fundamentally be pushed around with coercion and force. They can research, they can talk to each other and strangers on the internet and they are absolutely fucking terrible at judging risk and you think it's a good idea to put every adult in their life between them and the thing that they know will alleviate their significant and very real distress?

This shit is going to backfire.

Vote left of Labour. There's never been a better chance to vote third party without risking a Tory government and in the worst case even if we get the cunts for another five years they'll have the slimmest majority and the Labour Party will have had a solidly spanked arse and we might get someone other than a Tory in a red tie running the party for 2029

Lovense, a brand of vibrator I have, just saw fit to send me a push notification for their "Lovense global orgy". It's bad enough that they'll put an unsolicited ad on my lock screen without consideration for who might see it, but when I complained I got an automated, AI generated response telling me I should disable notifications in settings if I don't want that to happen. How about don't make sensitive push notifications without so much as an opt out

Before Brexit can be internalised as the source of our woes it first needs a scapegoat. If we "did the wrong kind of Brexit" then Boris is a shoe-in, but I suspect a lot of Brits will need absolution for their idiotic votes and if there's no obvious proximate culprit other than "the media" then I wonder if we just sit with the tension (and the consequences) of Brexit forever or if the nation finds a convenient minority to blame for it somehow

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

morning all, apparently I have now become so cynical that I look at politics through the lens of how most of the agents in the process will engage in ego defence

also I have my timeline wrong, there was the whole Brexit Bus so I suppose Boris is still absolutely the lightning rod. Good. Haha. So now I'm wondering when the right political thunderstorm will hit?

My current nightmare is that the Tories will be hammered so hard this Thursday that the back benches will run a leadership challenger against Sunak ...

… And the party rank and file will then vote Liz Truss in again as party leader.

She's had a year to lick her wounds and work out what she did wrong, and in her tiny mind it can only be that she didn't do everything fast enough and hard enough.

So we'll get a Liz Truss equivalent of the US Republicans' Project 2025.

zip,
@zip@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross oh christ on a bike, it's just occurred to me that for a 45 day period we had nuclear submarines floating about in the ocean with a letter of last resort with instructions provided by Truss
