Since 2018, Netflix has raised prices on its most popular plans by around 50%, with the Standard plan increasing from $10.99 to $15.49 per month, and the Premium plan going from $13.99 to $22.99 per month.

At what point does Netflix stop gouging its customers?

How high does the price have to rise for consumers to stop taking it?

And finally - what the ever living f**k has Netflix done to justify raising its prices?

@Daojoan My guess is they’ll keep raising the premium tiers until nobody uses them. Then kill them. The ad-supported tier will be the only option and they’ll slowly raise that year after year

@Daojoan And also why I told Netflix to go fuck themselves by ditching them after twenty years.

@Daojoan

They go by the same calculus they do with gas prices: when theft starts eating into the profit margin.

Of course, with surveillance tech, you can raise that bar by a lot.

@Daojoan 50% over six years sounds somewhat reasonable, tho?

That's a 7% year-over-year increase, nothing too far off from market returns they need to beat big time.

@djh it sounds reasonable to investors and market analysts, sure.

What have they done to make it reasonable for working families? Should they accept 7% yoy price hikes for the same product and service?

@Daojoan Netflix: “As we continue to add more TV shows and movies and introduce new product features, our plans and prices may change.”

Analysts: Netflix is the main beneficiary of structural changes in media with forecast 15% revenue growth in 2024. Their playbook is “1) price increases, 2) platform consolidation, 3) library curation (with attendant asset write-downs), 4) cuts to content spending (adjusting for strike-related declines in 2023) and 5) a renewed focus on content licensing.”

@Daojoan They stopped gouging me with the last price increase.

I dumped them.

Well, perhaps not last price increase, it's been awhile now.
