the $5 bill from the 1896 "Educational" series of banknotes featuring allegorical figures that were partially nude was banned in Boston, Massachusetts

@kaia I like seeing these old bills because it really demonstrates how far we've fallen artistically in engraving. Look how weak this is. I realize a lot of it is anti-counterfeiting protection but it has no composition and is loaded with just empty space.

@sun @kaia the old bills were art

I miss playing in the bank while my dad was doing extra work there on the weekends when it was closed. I got to explore the giant vault and my dad would show me their collection of super old bills and coins. I have indeed touched these rare bills

I've never seen the $100,000 bill though

@kaia @feld @sun big coin 👀

@Hoss@shitpost.cloud avatar

I'd feel a little bad about melting the giant coin down, but the money would be totally worth it.

@kaia @sun I think I still have one of those in my purse

@kaia

That was a heist!

@feld

Were the 5K and 10K notes ever actually used?

@kaia @sun

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@feld @kaia 100K bills were only used by federal reserve or something.

feld,
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

@sun @kaia interbank transfers I believe, yeah

@feld

I think, the Deutsch Marks of my childhood were quite beautiful (they were replaced in the 1990s by duller ones).

Of, course, I never owned a 1000 Marks note, but I have seen them.

Every denomination 5/10/20/50/100/500 had a different colour. The faces in the front were portraits of non-famous people by great German artists (like Dürer, Lucas Cranach etc.), the backside symbolic pictures.

@kaia @sun

backside of the green 5 Deutsch Mark note, displaying oak leaves - the oak is a national symbol
frontside of the brown 1000 Deutsch Mark note. A bearded man in a fur coat, some hairs hanging over his forehead
backside of the brown 1000 Deutsch Mark note. A Romanic cathedral surrounded by trees, representing medieval German architecture

@mina @feld @kaia @sun interesting that i remember that hobo's face so well, despite having probably never having held a 1000 Mark bill 🤔. i guess their image was commonly used in advertising and fake bills (play money, candy, etc)…

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@sofia

Yes indeed.

@feld @kaia @sun

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@mina @feld @kaia @sun oh wait, that face wasn't even on the 90s bills. okay then i'm pretty sure i've never seen in in real life, probably just a very memorable picture 😅.

mina,
@mina@berlin.social avatar

@sofia

Yes, but it used to be on advertisements and on play money.

I still find it so funny that you call a guy a hobo, who had been a symbol for wealth and prosperity for decades.

@feld @kaia @sun

@kaia Is this the fabled "boob money" I keep hearing about? :blobcatgiggle2:
