@shantini @airspeedswift I still remember, when I worked at a weather science company, asking one of the folks there why she used Fortran when C ran so much faster.

She said “because execution speed is of little importance, but the time I don’t have to spend debugging and dealing with all the shit Fortran protects me from is of great importance. I can write more programs in Fortran because of the work I don’t have to do.”

That still guides a lot of my thinking.
