is like… "Okay I know I am missing my kidnapped son, my spouse was brutally murdered by unknown individuals, and I'm hundreds of years out of place, but my absolute Number One priority is going to be rescuing this cat who just ran away"

I mean, legit priorities, and also wtf game?

Really I think my final analysis on is something like "this game contains a third from four separate games, each of those games is inherently enjoyable on its own, but they don't actually work together particularly well and each part often end up getting in the way of the other parts"

@hrefna the colony/base building mini-game eventually felt like it became the main game, and at that point playing became like a chore. I remember finishing the main quest in anger mostly to have an excuse to stop playing.

@anderseknert Yeah, exactly.

Like… I enjoy the colony building game. That could be the game. But then they don't commit to it because you still have this main storyline that's completely unrelated and takes you really far afield, and to do that storyline the base builder keeps getting in the way or consuming resources I could use for other things

But then the base builder also feels unfinished, with an overreliance on timed fetch quests because they didn't have anything else to do there

@hrefna it’s almost a decade since I played(!) but yeah, I remember enjoying building the bases at first too. But once I had all of them, running around to fight fires was pretty much a full-time job, and it didn’t leave me any time to enjoy the other parts. Which is silly of course because I could just have said fuck it and ignored it, but my OCD tendencies wouldn’t have it. I agree though, it could have been a fun game on its own base they invested in it.

@anderseknert Yeah exactly. I would really enjoy a "setting up a supply network for Vault 81 or Vault 53" game! But I can't play that game effectively without a very specific build and even then it's only one third of what that game would need…

…and then it keeps getting in the way of the rest of the game and the rest of the game keeps getting in the way of the supply network game.

My solution to the firefighting in this playthrough is to just… not report back to Preston >_>

@hrefna hah, Preston! I remember now. That’s a clever solution if it helps stop the flow of alerts.

The other thing I remember about the game was how despite the quite dramatic story arc, the plot twist of the main quest, and all that… I never managed to feel like I really cared about the fate of the protagonist. I’m not sure why that was.. something just felt off in the storytelling. Hell, I even remember Preston but can’t remember the name of the main character 😄

@hrefna I should say though, I did enjoy much of the game up until the the end. I don’t think it was anywhere close to New Vegas though, despite its more polished appearance.
