Zuckerberg is bragging already about Threads reaching 10 millions users, despite blocking all of EU because of privacy laws. Already half of the total Fediverse belongs to him today.
By next week the majority of users connected to the Fediverse will see it through another manipulation machine engineered by Meta. We’ll soon be that weird 5% minority while the rest will be …Facebook users trying a new thing. And we know what happens to minorities.
@santiago How does defederation solve the issue? Meta will grow one way or the other. Users won't quit #threadapp and flock to 🐘 just because they can't follow someone on a 🐘 instance. How does defederation solve any problem?
@bensb Meta will still be huge or even grow indeed. I don’t think Thread users need to migrate, anymore than FB users if they are happy in this world. We left for a reason.
All I know is Meta being Meta many will want to defederate once they show their true colors. Sooner or later the cash machine, the political influence machine will turn on. Just better not get entangled before they do.
@santiago The 5% will only be even more irrelevant by defederating.
"Start using free softwares while keeping connections with everyone" is a better argument than joining the weird 5% who cut all connection with people who aren't nerds.
@matthieu_xyz The idea of the Fediverse was exactly to be irrelevant for the ad-based, privacy-intrusive, commercial social networks. We’re here to be uninteresting to them.
An intentionally low monetization place with costs supported by its own users. One that billionaires cannot steer towards their interests. Being irrelevant in this context is awesome !
@matthieu_xyz I will be pretty happy to have a separate account for the Meta-dominated Fediverse.
Actually I already have an Instagram account if I really need to interact with this dystopian side of humanity so. Ready to follow Britney Spears and Coca-Cola’s official accounts if I need to.
@matthieu_xyz Obviously each user can decide to block for himself too but there’s something I noticed: when suddenly one account here started boosting a lot of Twitter-based content I noticed I got progressively angry. And it took a moment to realize this was the cause. I was angry at being captivated by the usual attention-grabbing 💩 instead of the interesting people I chose.
@matthieu_xyz What does this even have to do with federation with Meta ?
Simply that in order to experience this feeling I needed before to experience a safe place where all this crap isn’t commonplace. And realize that losing this was bad. It makes me want to keep this little place little an non-commercial. For once.
