I want to rebuild my personal and consulting (audits) websites and need some inspiration. What are some good examples of personal/consultant websites in the tech space?

Also, what CMS do you recommend?

Ever thought about markdown? I realise I don't post as often as you, but I find writing markdown to be very easy. I'm currently using Jigsaw to build static sites using Blade templates, but moving to my own system (still using Blade).

As I write a fair bit of CSS and JavaScript stuff, writing directly in a .blade.md file makes it easy to include snippets and living examples.

@horuskol I don't post much on my website itself, it's mostly static pages. Although I want to start mirroring my mailing list content over there...

I'd like something that's easily editable in browser, rather than having to code & commit though. But maybe I need to reconsider that requirement.

I used to think the same about editing in the browser - but came to realise a CMS and the hosting needed is really overkill for myself and my needs. Statically generating markdown and templates means I can just publish to netlify and get free hosting for most of my sites.

In-browser CMS and server side rendering does have some advantages, so it's about balancing your needs.

@valorin CMS: if you have the time, , , , Jekyll (not php) … in that order.

@outofcontrol I'm definitely wanting to stick in the PHP and Laravel space, if I can.

Currently on WordPress... I'd like something easier to template that doesn't involve diving back into WP land...

@valorin ExpressionEngine isn’t laravel, but it has a nice templating engine, is secure and has a good history with a strong backing. I am not related to EE in any way but have used it for a few large sites over the years. There is still a free version I think

@bici @valorin Using EE for some clients still and contemplating migrating from craftcms back to EE. Need the experience on the latest version

    phoopee3,

@valorin @outofcontrol I’d suggest octobercms, but that’s mostly because I need to learn more about it. It’s a cms built on top of laravel.

@phoopee3 @outofcontrol I haven't checked out OctoberCMS in a long time, but their block-list approach to security with everything in the public dir worried me. Laravel is not like WP where it's designed to all live there.

But that was a long time ago, so I should check them out again.

@valorin @phoopee3 Not harping on EE, but I’ve used it since 2007, by default everything is in the webroot, but it is trivial to move it above webroot and in my book, the first thing I do after installing.

@bici @valorin @phoopee3 Additionally, I move admin.php to something and somewhere else. That is super simply to config too. For the paranoid among us, you can add extra protection via basic auth or something, if putting the admin.php in a subdirectory.
