Tomorrow, watch Japan's attempt to land their SLIM spacecraft on the moon! The livestream link is below, and the landing will be at approximately 10:20 am ET on Friday, January 19. If they succeed, they will be the fifth country (U.S., Soviet Union, China, India) to accomplish this feat!

As long as my five year old cooperates, I will do live updates over here!

This is the powered descent trajectory! (Screenshot from the YouTube livestream)

Graph on the right -- white is expected orbit, red is what SLIM is doing. GOing well so far!! Descent has started.

Engines are currently on, soon they'll be turned off.

Velocity looks good. Things are going well.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

Trajectory is going very close to the planned model

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

Second boost. SLIM is descending again

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

The top left blue indicator is fuel, there is currently around 91 kg and there should be around 10kg left when all is set and done

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

Everything looks good!!!! About 15km from the moon's surface now

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

Engine has stopped and the lander is cruising and trying to scan the moon's surface. Around 15km. Third boost phase coming up.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

Third boost stage has started.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

5 km!!! SO CLOSE

@skrishna You could feel the excitement, the right guy on the video feed smiled a bit 😅

EU, US, anywhere else: Something successfully lands, everyone loses their shit (rightfully so).

Japan: Friendly, yet formal atmosphere. A smile or two. Nodding.

LOVE IT

@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

They’re still checking the status of the spacecraft.

loke,
@loke@functional.cafe avatar

@skrishna It looked like it flipped upside down just as it touched down. The trust indicators looked like they were all firing as well?

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@loke Yeah this is what everyone's asking I think. I saw someone say they thought that's how it was supposed to land, but not sure.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

This is excruciating. No confirmation yet.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

livestream is over, we have to wait for the press conference now

jeffluszcz,

@skrishna The angle of the lander on the screen looks concerning...
.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@jeffluszcz right?

michaelgemar,
@michaelgemar@mstdn.ca avatar

@skrishna Doesn’t seem promising…

pettter,

@skrishna Closing the stream and then asking people to come back to the press conference.. Not super promising is it?

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@pettter 😬

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@skrishna Seeing over on the other site that there's at least some signal coming through to NASAs Deep Space Network, so it's not a hard landing at least.

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@pettter I posted about the DSN a few minutes ago!

martinvermeer,
@martinvermeer@fediscience.org avatar

@pettter @skrishna Yeah, taking their time with the status check. They are getting telemetry though... did it topple over?

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@martinvermeer @skrishna I thought I saw something like that on the screen just as it landed, but thought that was just noise in the telemetry..

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@pettter @martinvermeer It landed for sure, they're just checking the health of the spacecraft and making sure it didn't crash land

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@skrishna @martinvermeer Oh yeah, it's definitely on the ground

martinvermeer,
@martinvermeer@fediscience.org avatar

@pettter @skrishna So it landed but the solar array not working... on battery power rn

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@martinvermeer @pettter exactly. they're still calling it a success because they successfully accomplished the soft landing according to this press conference

skribe,
@skribe@aus.social avatar

@skrishna I'm glad your five-year old cooperated 😂

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

@skribe literally what's happening behind me 😂

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

I'm definitely going to try to live post about the landing but my 5yo will likely be home from school because of snow, so....we'll see!
