@NaraMoore Guns do kill, which is why we’re at fault for not eradicating them. People have used the forerunner of so-called AI for a long while every time they text and accept suggestions. We become outraged, then normalize. In the end, it’s about human weakness and not doing the right thing. Ban guns. Restrict AI. Quit blaming anything and everything else for our failings.
@NaraMoore@CA_Hawthorne I kind of agree here because I remember (and have been burned in the discourse over) all of the Discourse for everything from Photoshop to electronic music/sampling to writing fanfic (or writing specific types like slash)
Unsatisfyingly, aside from a very few absolute moral horizons (not depicting minors in sexualized ways, not spreading hate, not plagiarizing) at the extremes, a lot of the ethical/moral lines there are personal, not absolute 1/2
@NaraMoore@CA_Hawthorne So that's why I think the various AI/LLM/machine learning debates will end up in that same place - there's unquestionably harmful uses/user behaviors that need to be stopped, there's also a whole world of gray areas and personal ethics vs "required for everyone" ethical stances, etc
Like, obviously it's beyond abominable to use AI to generate lewd images or to fight war, but whether to use it to correct grammar is far more squishy and gray 2/2
@NaraMoore@CA_Hawthorne (Somewhat off topic, yet on, I remember when any digital art was frowned on for not being Meaningful and True Art like that produced by painting/drawing, when phone and digital camera photography was shunned as Not Real Photography because to be a Real Photographer you had to be film only with a darkroom, when electronic music was considered Not Real Music because people like me could be producers/samplers/beat makers without instrument training...)
