  • Moving user profile to a new instance : Provide the ability for users to migrate their account and all associated data (posts, comments, moderation actions, saved posts, etc.) from one Lemmy instance to another. This would allow users to move freely between instances without losing their online identity, history, and credibility built up over time on a previous instance.

It’s crazy when I see this super popular issues closed without completion by the main devs. It makes me feel like they don’t care at all about user feedback.

All I know about it is that Mastodon offers this feature and is one that users have requested in a few very popular issues.

The woman is Dorothy Wainer. The old man is Edward Wainer. I don't know who the young man on the left is. The location is Ottawa and it's December 1985.

If you recognize the man in the blue jacket, please let me know.

Venom: Live From The Hammersmith Odeon Theatre
Arguably one of the most important bands in extreme music and extreme metal history, VENOM needs little introduction. After the ensemble's already infamous performance released as "The 7th Date of Hell - Live at Hammersmith Odeon 1984", the pioneering beast that is VENOM returned to the venue in 198...

Year's Best Science Fiction - Second Annual Collection - 1985 - Featuring the work of William Gibson, Octavia Butler, Robert Silverberg, Fredrick Pohl and Tanith Lee (pdfhost.io)

In spite of its ominous literary associations, 1984 proved to be a rather quiet year for SF. There were no major scandals like 1983’s infamous Great Timescape Fiasco, no SF lines driven into oblivion by corporate greed and shortsightedness, no major editorial shakeups … but if you looked closely enough, in the right places,...

There is a ticket for moving profile between instances in lemmy, but it’s still open since Dec 10 2021.

Serien | Old Series: MacGyver

Issues:

  • Moving user profile to a new instance
  • Allow instance migration for communities and users
  • Community is gone from instance after changing name by a remote moderator
Spzi, to asklemmy in Are there benefits to hosting your own personal lemmy?

Not yet, that's (open) issue : Moving user profile to a new instance.

The devs also explicitly mentioned this request in their statement:

we are seeing lots of requests to implement major new features, such as migration between instances, or combining similar communities. As described above, we are completely overloaded with work, and definitely won’t have time to implement these in the near future. If there is a feature you want to see implemented, you will likely need to work on it yourself, or find someone who can.

For now, you can create another account on another instance and use that instead (or both), or just peek how the experience might be.

Spzi, to lemmyworld in Lemmy is libre software. Don't want to get abused? Keep Lemmy libre.

Let’s say one instance would get massive, and would stop federating and start charging for API access. If that happened, we would be in the same situation as now with Reddit. Yea, it would e a lot easier to set up your own instance, but you would still need to convince all these people to give up that main instance.

I argue it wouldn't be the same, but much better for the users.

You can already make an account on another instance. Ditch the old, use the new. Problem solved. The big advantage is, you don't need to look for a new platform, accustom yourself with the new environment, and so on. Switching between instances is much easier than switching between platforms.

Yes, you might lose access to some communities, but that would happen anyways if you switch platform. And community redundancies exist (the good side of 'fragmentation').

Hopefully, we will get GitHub feature request fulfilled: Moving user profile to a new instance, which would further ease transitioning between instances. (Don't get too excited, doesn't seem it's being worked on. Consider contributing if you can.)

This would make it harder to excert power in awful instances, people can easily vote with their feet.

Spzi, to technology in Lemmy needs two things to be successful

Compare it to e-mail. If you want to switch provider you have to backup and restore your emails if you want to.

When moving to another mail provider, I can forward mails going to the old address to the new one.

When moving to another lemmy account (technically creating an unconnected second one), I have no way to be notified of replies to posts or comments I made with the old account.

There are a couple other use cases where the comparison doesn't really hold. My hopes are on Moving user profile to a new instance , but it probably won't be implemented any time soon.

Spzi, to asklemmy in What is the thing that has surprised you the most about the Fediverse?

It seems bizarre in a land of federated instances to not have the identity provider decoupled (or even truly decentralized). Instance goes away? Poof, there goes your identity. “Backed up” your data and want to import it into another instance? That functionality doesn’t exist today.

Just linking a suggestion someone made in the same spirit:

https://beehaw.org/post/605834

They propose / wish for Decentralized Identities.

There's also an open issue on GitHub Moving user profile to a new instance .
