The story continues in today's session of Dwarf Fortress: The World of Wonder. Our intrepid fort has had its first migration wave of only two dwarves which is not a great start. We can only help the coming caravan and the autumn migration wave brings better news.
Legend has it that if you play Dwarf Fortress on your birthday, you become a wizard.
We're going to start a new fortress today! I'll be doing something a little different because I plan on making this into a recorded series where I do a voice over, so I won't be showing my camera in today's stream.
Dwarf Fortress: "The World of Wonder" streaming now!
#DwarfFortress: "The Mythical Dimension", Episode 2: We've established our fort and are preparing for the first migration wave and also the first trade caravan.
We need to mine out some stone so we can create trade goods and more furniture. Then we can dig deeper. No, deeper. Keep going.
Tonight we're going to embark and prepare for what could be a long-haul game. Dwarves are very few in number in this Universe and are being threatened with extinction. Can we bring them back from the brink? Let's find out!
I love that the horrific method of murder from A Cask of Amontillado is just the normal SOP (other than smashing with a bridge) in #DwarfFortress for cutting off Werebeasts and Vampires so they don't ruin the rest of the fort.
Honestly Horrific Death is generally one of the first things to mind for any #DwarfFortress player for most problems. Sadly, it only solves about half of them, but it's always worth a shot.
@steamdeckhq Do you know if it is somehow possible to prevent the #Steamdeck from taking control over the connected Keyboard? When I launch #DwarfFortress via Steam, I am unable to type in the game. Only some shortcuts are working. When I launch the game outside of Steam (yes, that works), the kb works as expected. I tried different controller configs without success.
Big shoutout to @mrnugget who recommended the best books I've read this year. #1 is the absolutely profound "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes. Close follow-up is the incredible historical non-fiction novels by David Grann, and Krakauer's riviting first-person account of disaster on Everest. King's "11.22.63" was also a great read.
@last recommended the best professional development book I read this year, "So Good They Can't Ignore You". It's a book I now recommend to all my early-career friends, but it deeply affected my thinking about mid-career choices as well.
Fred and Mw eventually twisted my arm to read the Bobiverse series, which turned out to be the most fun you can have in SciFi and is an absolute nerdish delight. Highly recommended. Fred also recommended Goldratt's "The Goal" which is great for analysing productivity in an organisation, but REALLY upped my #DwarfFortress game.
I hope to post a bit more about some of these before I get quiet over the holidays. Thanks to everyone who made great recommendations 📚
sigh I wish #DwarfFortress would bring back the #ASCII text mode. I don't know why, but I really enjoy playing games in an actual terminal window, or even via #SSH.
Good news for Mac users who want to play Kitfox #DwarfFortress; by the time you’re supported on Steam, Adventure Mode will have been implemented. So you’ve got that to look forward to.
