The same thing that drove me nuts about the BridgyFed/BlueSky bridge discourse also drives me nuts with the Threads discourse. :neofox_what: Why isn't there a fediblock level that lets admins default to suspending a server, but allows users to opt back into federating with them? Is there a technical reason for it?
I really don't think it should've been on the BridgyFed developer to build an opt-in system that rightfully should've already been in Mastodon, the same way I don't think blocking Threads outright is the best solution (granted it's better than openly federating, hence why they're suspended here). Why doesn't Mastodon have a built-in system for letting users opt-in to federating with a server? :confused_dog:
:mastodon: Something I wish Mastodon did with CWs that Tumblr does better… Tumblr allows you to tag the type of content so viewers can opt-in or out of each category.
Wait, what? For some reason I never realized that Mastodon verifies Bandcamp links. ✅ All I had to do was add the Mastodon URL to the Bandcamp profile and vice versa. Neat!
Please include your pronouns in your bio. :otter_peek: It's such a necessity when trying to figure out how to address people.
Plus, if you're using the Mastodon app or one of its forks, you can have a "Pronouns" section and it'll appear next to your username in the home feed. It's very useful. :meowuwu:
On Mastodon 4.2.0, hashtags are now displayed separately from the post if they are on the last line, which is a huge W, I always felt awkward using them before because of how prominent they looked.
I cannot wait for the day expanding a reply causes the client and/or the server to fetch the full context by crawling the thread (one post at a time if needed)… it would make the experience a lot better even if it took a few seconds for each to load.
I don't really understand why the reporting system works the way that it does on Mastodon. :blobfoxthinkgoogly: "Forward to instance" should absolutely not be a user option, it should be an option reserved for the admin/moderation staff.
It makes it a lot more frustrating to stop users from abusing the reporting system, and will often just lead to me outright blocking reports from an instance because of a single bad report. My users are great with reporting and we've never sent a bad report out, but I've gotten an annoying amount of spammy or abusive reports coming in from bigger instances. :drgn_sigh:
As Twitter continues to experience issues (ideological and technical), people will be looking for a place to go. Would you support instances purchasing small ad campaigns on Twitter to let users know about mastodon as an alternative?
I’d love to read more about your opinion in the comments, too!
Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.
Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)
SO.
This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

The Frog never learns that the Scorpion will always sting and kill it, because that is the nature of the Scorpion.
#Meta has spent the past 20 years buying up and destroying smaller companies, and just pushing them out of business. Why would they be any different this time?

I've often heard #tech bros talk about how detrimental #defederation is to #mastodon. Whether they take the "free speech" argument, or "engagement/adoption", or whatever else, it's interesting how it speaks to their world view/values.
They want the right to broadcast into everyone's eyes/ears.
They want their $microBlogging replacement to be "for everyone" without any amount of critical thought about how that's a different way of invoking the paradox of tolerance.
What they want from Mastodon reminds me of Bo Burnham's take on the Internet. "A little bit of everything, all of the time." and the juxtaposition of the content you can find on it. "Here's a tip for straining pasta; here's a nine-year-old who died"
They can't conceive of the fact some people would rather go to a corner of the Internet where things are generally nicer all of the time. Where you don't have to worry about what pops through your feed. Hell, I even put a CW on this post. #mastodonMeta
#MetaText app is no longer maintained. It looks like it's still available on the store and was still working.
If you're using the app I'd seriously consider moving to a new app and revoking access to MetaText given any future discovered vulnerabilities have no means to be reported or resolved.
