FYI - I worked on 2 different #RealityTV shows in #Canada & after those lived work experiences - told everyone I could - don't agree to go on these shows. It's almost all scripted, not reality. Crews are forced to put pressure on voluntary participants - who rarely know WTF they're signing up for & producers exploit naivety. Don't chase easy fame/easy money - they both come at high personal costs. Don't agree to be traumatized on TV, for money. You'll regret it.
Worst idea ever? Using Windows 98 as an embedded operating system for an oscilloscope. It takes five minutes for the oscilloscope to boot. DID YOU NOT NOTICE THAT, TEKTRONIX? Anyway... Yeah. I fell sorry for the engineer who had to implement that idea. #RetroTechnology#EmbeddedSystems#BadIdea#Windows98
@carapace didn't you knew @libresilicon.com before?
@leviathan et. al. work on #OpenSource process nodes from scratch since #Fabbing is extremely interlocked with #patents and #NDAs reducing the ability to freely choose fabs or develop silicon.
If you have been using #Unity and you wanna jump ship to the nearest competitor, #GodotEngine is gonna be your best bet. The structure of a project isn't exactly the same, but it's similar enough that it won't take long to adjust.
Below, I'll give a few tips and talk about pain points you might run into, to help you try it out properly, and make an evaluation. #GameDev
@Fenreliania So I'd rather expect #W4Games to make that #SDK integration happening with a sort-of toolchain similar to #Unity: Thus they as a #Company can comply with all the #NDAs and #Gatekeeping the Platform Owners demand - just like Unity today.
TL;DR, they're hoping to beat #BlueSky to the punch through M&A activity. I ruminated a bit on this in a previous thread.
If true, I do not think this is a serious threat to the FediVerse, certainly not an existential threat. It doesn't even imply any sort of carpetbagging/EEE/de-inventing strategy for #ActivityPub.
Regarding the talk of #NDAs: the presence of an NDA is of almost no informational value. They are standard practice in business meetings where any sort of new product/strategy is discussed. I've personally signed NDAs for job interviews. Many, many of these meetings end up going nowhere.
In my experience, treating NDAs as evidence of something nefarious (especially w.r.t. a business meeting) tends to be a pretty good sign you're crossing over into conspiracy theory territory.
@jonathan@aral Generally the first rule of #NDAs in business between sophisticated parties is that the NDA is mutual. That is, it protects both sides from information they disclose. Also, what is to be disclosed is described in some detail, and there is a finite short term for the agreement to be binding. Even then, these things are looked at closely by lawyers for both parties and potential pitfalls like getting roped into a conspiracy of silence are evaluated.
Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.
Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)
SO.
This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".
The Scorpion is asking the Frog to let it ride on his back, and this particular Frog is all too happy to help.
The Frog never learns that the Scorpion will always sting and kill it, because that is the nature of the Scorpion.
#Meta has spent the past 20 years buying up and destroying smaller companies, and just pushing them out of business. Why would they be any different this time?
"WHEN SOMEONE SHOWS YOU WHO THEY ARE, BELIEVE THEM THE FIRST TIME." (Maya Angelou)
Oh FFS if you are signing NDAs to cooperate on developing apps in a free and open ecosystem YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. The party demanding the NDA is clearly already acting in BAD FAITH...
@msh
I guess you can't tell any stories about bad personal experiences with NDAs, alas. Do big software companies generally require #NDAs to do business with them?
