Slugcat - Rain World

We've been trying other games since the kid just got a PS5 and has PlayStation Plus, some free stuff in there. Dead Cells, kid is pretty good at it. He wasn't a fan of the permadeath, always going back to the start. It's brutal. We also tried Skul. Same deal. Like a mini Dead Cells, kinda. Now, he's playing Rain World. It's pretty rad. He's good at it, I knew he would be. Again, I couldn't handle the controls of it, etc, when I tried. But wow, Rain World is a beautiful game.

Wow, crazy that is getting yet another expansion!

https://www.gamesradar.com/while-hollow-knight-hopefuls-wait-for-silksong-another-modern-metroidvania-classic-gears-up-for-its-second-massive-expansion/

I wonder if this will encourage me to actually finish the base game, which is absolutely beautiful and unlike anything else that has been created, but wow, there are only so many times you can be shockingly devoured by predators before you have to face the fact that we live in an uncaring universe and nature is full of unending death.

Tried 100 Days, a winemaking sim...didn't like it. Autosave trapped me in a Loan Death Loop. Very limited actions, very slow start. Eh. Looks lovely, cute idea, but I'll have to pass.

Trying again. Hoping between the Monk and other updates it's enjoyable again. It's a game like Teardown where I feel the dev's ideas (and difficulty) got way beyond what players expected/want.

But I only played it at launch, before classes and all that.

This object has arrived at its intended recipient, so I can show it here - this is a wee project bag for my niece, featuring her own artwork that I embroidered onto a felt square and stitched to the bag. Apparently this made her (happy) cry so I think I did good.

Pattern is the Kato project bag from Kandou Patterns (https://www.etsy.com/listing/702002990/drawstring-bag-sewing-pattern-beginner), fabric is from the Languid collection from Kaufman. Niece’s artwork is here: https://www.tumblr.com/cosmos-and-whatever/738280130912436224/hey-i-hope-everyone-has-a-nice-new-years-and-i

Watch "The Most Complex Ecosystem in any Game" on YouTube

I just found this gem called . Check out this great video about the systems and gameplay of the game. It just looks insane! I am going to connect my laptop to my TV and my Xbox controller and play this until 3am tonight!

That's Mae from Night in the Woods and the squirrel thing from Rain World. (I'll go back to that game... eventually)

No idea about the size relations of these characters.
Probably Mae's "nightmare eyes" should have been a lot bigger, I missed that chance.

I'm not one for "New Year's resolutions", but I am one for overly ambitious projects.

For 2023, Project365 is "One New Game Per Day".

Given that I have 634 unplayed games in my Steam account and {mumble} unredeemed bundle Steam keys, there's a reason my unplayed collection is tagged "Pile of Shame".

I'll pin this to my profile, and give a brief summary here each day (or x, if I miss x days due to work or stuff).

I'll play 15-30 minutes of (at least) one new game I've never played before (or played less than 15 minutes of). I'll give every game at least 15 minutes, even if I hate every minute of it.

I'm also open to suggestions; if you reply to this thread with a game, I'll schedule it, or tell you what I thought of it.

One of the things that's come up is that I have a bunch of games that I've played once, and not touched again.

Unplayed games: #NewPlay
Trying a game again: #RePlay
Going live on Twitch: #GrissGames

I'll hashtag these with #Project365ONG so you can mute it if you're not interested.

January 12, 2024 - Day 377 - NewPlay Review
Total NewPlays: 413

Game: Rain World

Unplayed: 39d (1m8d)
Playtime: 18m

Rating: 2 - Meh

Rain World is a 2D platformer, set in a post-apocalyptic world, where you play as a "slugcat" that's been separated from its family, in an intro that's almost as depressing as Stray's intro.

The character animations are great, and the environmental design is very well done, but after 15 minutes of shimmying up and down poles and through pipes, while trying to find food and avoid predators, I wasn't really enjoying myself.

Apparently it only gets more difficult moving forward, so it looks like this was a swing and a miss.

I just found Rain World a bit:

2: Meh
