It was wonderful to finally visit Dairy Pit. It's the subject of a great body of folklore. The water is riddled with spirits, and lost souls still wander nearby. Locals report ominous feelings, and other tales talk of a mermaid who once guarded the depths. I'm currently writing a post about the Dairy Pit- I can't wait to share!
One of the things that's most insightful about writing about the Devil in Shropshire Folklore (for my book) is how complex these beliefs are, and how they serve as a conduit for the attitudes of a community. I feel such a tangible connection to the past through these tales. Owd Scratch is more than a stock character. He is a powerful symbol, gaining new meaning with every retelling.
Heath Chapel is tucked away in the Clee Hills. Formally part of the abandoned medieval village, parts date from the 1140s. It's an incredible building, rich with the spirit of the past. I felt as if centuries of the congregation greeted me at the door. 💚

After a few knocks this week, I'm really having a crisis of confidence regarding my work and a big ol' bout of imposter syndrome. I am trying my best to be kind to myself and ease through it ✨️
I've uncovered more information about Nanny Morgan! I'm just trying to dig a bit deeper now, but I'm definitely in need of a rewrite! It makes me so happy to add more depth to her story!
We have just 7 days left of the kickstarter to reach our target. I am so grateful for all of the support I've received so far. Together, we can make the second series a reality!
Fun fact: My new video game contains #pixelart encaustic Victorian floor tiles inspired by those manufactured in the tiny village of Jackfield, #Shropshire... where I happen to live. ❤️
My name is Amy, and I'm a writer and folklorist specialising in the interplay between history and folklore, with an emphasis on the Folklore and Ghosts of Shropshire.
Ann Morgan's story highlights the importance of honouring historical legacies in folkloric narratives. I believe it's time for the woman behind the witch to be remembered. Let's celebrate her for all of her intricacies.
