Rasta,

@haligonia Federal government pays for Rural Fiber, Province pays for Rural cellular , taxpayers pay the highest rates, and pay for the installation to a monopoly company that makes billion dollar profits?

The government could install the towers cheaper and sell the service back to the big Three ?

Bell alone made $1.6 b profits off the backs of Canadians

For years now, I’ve rarely gotten SMS spam. But about two weeks ago I started getting 5-10 spam SMS texts per day, every day. They’re all crap like this, most of from those 5-digit short code numbers. Did I just stumble onto some sort of list, or is this happening to others suddenly too?

@gruber
Not here in WI. It could be you have been harvested. Or, a wave of spam hitting various area codes/exchanges. I saw a bunch of spam a few months ago that then disappeared through inaction.

If your exchange is "profitable," then the spam will continue. Not much you can do about it individually, until feds and get serious about stopping the spam.

The European Union wants to help invest in "cable projects of European interest" that would reduce its reliance on too few undersea internet connections and make it less vulnerable to sabotage.

The EU push is expected to come in early 2024 as part of a new strategy to boost its telecom sector and internet infrastructure. It will lay the ground word for a new "digital networks act," announced by Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton.

Number::Phone 4.0000 is out! https://metacpan.org/release/DCANTRELL/Number-Phone-4.0000/view/lib/Number/Phone.pm The big change is that perls with 32-bit ints are no longer supported. That's because I've switched what library I used (the new one is 64-bit only) for an internal database. The new one creates much more compact data files. It is therefore more friendly towards running in small ephemeral containers in the cloud where a few megabytes of disk space cost actual money instead of being basically free on real servers. @Perl

How to get it up (a telegraph pole):-

  1. Get a really big screw, make really deep hole.
  2. Hammer steps into to top half (so engineers can reach the 'topknot').
  3. Hoist the pole into the air & drop it into the hole.
  4. Walk a few yards away and assess verticality by eye.
  5. Fill in the earth removed by screw - pack down firmly (no concrete - just a sprinkle of ashphalt on top)
  6. Done.

Use specialist tool to hoist the pole/&drop it into the hole
Worker walks away to judge the vertical, while the other manhandles the pole
Fill in the hole/Done

witewulf,

@robb thinking out loud with my hat on for a moment: now that a lot of people are using softphones (, , etc.) for making and receiving calls in the workplace, what we really need now are call control keys on our keyboards. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they're A Thing ™ before long 🤔

Let me guess: next move is to tell the that the telco industry is poor and under stress and requires direct payments from content providers.
