Dragon Magazine #52, August 1981. The first issue I ever bought, with Faerie Dragon cover art by #BorisVallejo. There's a great article in this issue concerning the differences between the Holmes Basic and Moldvay Basic rules, by Holmes and Moldvay, respectively.

Going back and actually reading will give you a much more accurate understanding of what playing in the early days was actually like than you will ever get by listening to old , , , , and bloviate about the invading their precious little hobby. was not for conservative and reactionary people who didn't appreciate change. Literally everything about our games was changeable at will, and so we did.

Dan Masters, aka "Professor Dungeon Master" today in his latest video: "I'm from the generation where you rolled 3d6 and you lived with it."

I am of an age with Dan, I've been playing since about 1981, and I say this is FALSE.

It drives me nuts when and claim "3d6 in order" was what "Gary intended".

A straight 3d6 was specifically deprecated by Gygax in the 1979 (p.11-12). "4d6 drop lowest" was literally the first method presented.
