Tonight: one of best things going. Tim Berne most Thursdays at Lowlands in Gowanus. As cozy as wild-eyed free jazz can get. With Tom Rainey and Gregg Belisle-Chi.
And then late, The James Buckley Trio (+2) at Barbes. Let me tell you, there's some holyshit! jams going down in Park Slope at the moment. Wake the kids and bring em down. ElectricMiles brand jamming, absolutely killer.
For those of you in NYC, I am bringing back my Freaks Day Out series in Red Hook. Monthly afternoon sets in a low key, outdoor park setting. If the weather cooperates, the first one will be on 3/16 with a version of this James Buckley band I saw at Barbes last week. All are welcome!
Tonight: good-timin' it with the sipping-whiskey voice of Brent Cobb at Bowery Ballroom. Man, this room is so great, wish the booking brought me here more often! Opener Ben Chapman was pretty great too.
Tonight: Laurie Anderson backed by Sexmob. Legends upon legends at BAM. Super fascinating as expected. And home at a reasonable hour, my localest venue.
Tonight: Stop 1:: Daniel Villarreal is a freakin groove merchant. More people should be talking about this funky awesomeness. The Chicago drummer and his band laying it down at Public Records on a Wednesday night.
Stop 2:: perfectly-timed* jaunt over to Joe's Pub for one of my favorite songwriters of the past 10 years: Caitlyn Canty. Sounding oh so sweet in a duo with pedal steel. Yes!
(*when the music starts a minute after you take your seat = pro's pro)
Tonight: Stop 1:: early set at Barbes. Old school Americana with personal fave Nora Brown... and friends. I love Brown so much, some day will be sawherwhen material. History lesson and sweet music all in one.
